Senoia holding parade, fireworks for Memorial Day

By Sarah Fay Campbell

The Newnan Times-Herald

Those who gave their lives defending America will be honored as part of Senoia's Memorial Day events Monday.

Events run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. downtown, with fireworks to follow at the Leroy Johnson ballpark on Howard Road at dusk Monday.

A veterans program will be held downtown at noon. The keynote speaker will be retired Army Captain Tommy Clack, who lost both legs and one arm in Vietnam.

The city's annual patriotic parade will be at 2 p.m., and will feature the 116th Army Band as well as local veterans who will be the collective grand marshals. The Army band will perform a mini-concert after the parade.

There will be a moment of silence at 3 p.m., and a 21-gun salute.

A military exhibit will be set up at the corner of Seavy and Barnes streets. There will be military Jeeps on display, as well as displays from the Commemorative Air Force, Sons of the Confederacy, Sons of the American Revolution, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

The day-long festival downtown will also feature a wide array of food, antiques, and arts and crafts vendors.

Evening events begin around 7 p.m. at Leroy Johnson Park on Howard Road. There will be entertainment by Scott Sargent and Charlie Filkins -- The Car Guys. The fireworks will begin at dark.

Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to sit on while enjoying the fireworks.

All events will take place rain or shine.

The weather forecast currently calls for a 50 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms on Monday.

"I hope people will come out even though they are saying there is a chance of scattered showers," said Gail Downs, promotions committee chairwoman for the Senoia Downtown Development Authority.

Last year, there was a similar forecast and, though it rained in Peachtree City, "it was beautiful in Senoia," Downs said.
