Senoia City Council unanimously approved a new city logo at its meeting on Monday.

Senoia adopts new logo

Senoia now has an official city logo and slogan.

The Senoia City Council unanimously approved the logo at its meeting on Monday.

The Downtown Development Authority and a DDA committee formed to consider issues related to the Southern Living Idea House event in Senoia this year worked with the city to come up with a logo to market the city and "get the name recognition out there," said Senoia Mayor Robert Belisle.

The city's iconic water tower figures prominently in the logo. The water tower itself is painted with the image of Princess Senoia. The Princess Senoia image is owned by the Senoia Area Historical Society.

"Originally, we did include the princess on the water tower. And in discussion with the historical society, they made it quite clear that they were not in favor of using the princess logo in any type of merchandising manner," Belisle said. "So the committee made the decision to take the princess off the water tower."

The new city logo will be used on all city correspondence. The slogan is, "The perfect setting. For life."

In other meeting business:

* The council discussed moving the Memorial Day fireworks event back to the ball fields at Leroy Johnson Park.

Last year, the fireworks display was at the city park at Marimac Lakes.

Gail Downs of the Downtown Development Authority said the authority has voted unanimously to ask the city to move the event back to the ball fields. The park is a beautiful setting, but there are safety issues, Downs said.

Because there is very little parking at Marimac Lakes, people were asked to park at the ball fields and to walk approximately a quarter mile on the city's path to the Marimac park. "If you were elderly or handicapped, that was not an option," Downs said. There is poor lighting on the path, Downs said, and some drivers on Hwy. 16 were pulling off the road to watch the fireworks. Additionally, there were "some children not being supervised at all around the lake."

Councilman Maurice Grover helped shuttle people back and forth last year. "It was extremely dangerous. We had people trying to walk, and golf carts going in both directions," he said. "Pylant Street was a mess."

* The council approved a resolution relating to utility relocation along Luther Bailey Road, which is needed for the intersection improvements under way at Ga. Hwy. 16, Luther Bailey, and Main Street.

The city has already relocated the lines, but the Georgia Department of Transportation will reimburse the city for the work "so long as we approve the resolution," said City Administrator Richard Ferry.

* The council chose a vendor for furniture for the new police station, following the recommendation of Police Chief Jason Edens.

* The council voted to deny a request from the Springdale Homeowners Association for several stop signs on Piedmont Drive.

Edens said he had officers sit on the road and count traffic for an hour at a time on three separate occasions.

Based on those observations, "I don't see a public safety reason to add any stop signs on Piedmont," Edens said. "With the number of stop signs" that were requested, "it could actually work to the detriment of traffic flow getting in and out of there, in my opinion," Edens said.

No one from Springdale was in attendance at the meeting.

"I would like to speak to someone with Springdale to see if I can address a specific issue they are having by police presence," Edens said. "It could be a specific issue where we could simply talk to someone and correct the problem."

* Mayor Robert Belisle announced that Paul Lombardi has built a temporary structure on the Gin property that will be used for public restrooms for the Southern Living Idea House.

The council voted to waive water and sewer tap fees for the temporary restrooms, since they are for public use, and to "absorb the water and sewer cost" up to $50 per month.

* The DDA is currently seeking arts and crafts vendors and parade participants for the Memorial Day parade. For more information, go to enjoysenoia.com .

The DDA is also seeking vendors for the monthly farmers market planned downtown. The market will be held the second Saturday of the month beginning in June. For more information, call city hall at 770-599-3679.

Dear Main Street Senoia,
You seem to be making a lot of progress, marketing the charm of Senoia, getting the Southern Living Home...can you help out Downtown Newnan and Main Street Newnan?
We could benefit from your ideas. Thanks!
