Schedule of holiday weekend activities

From sidewalk sales and Saturday morning's road race in downtown Newnan to the three-day Powers' Crossroads Country Fair and Art Festival in west Coweta, there is no shortage of things to do this holiday weekend.

Here's the rundown:

* Annual sidewalk sale -- In downtown Newnan in conjunction with Powers' weekend. Kicks off today at 9 a.m. and continues Saturday with Market Day on the Square 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., organized by Main Street Newnan.

* Sunrise on the Square Road Race -- Saturday morning, Court Square. One mile walk/run 7:45 a.m. with annual 5K race starting at 8 a.m. (times are earlier than previously reported). Route out LaGrange Street and through historic Greenville-LaGrange neighborhood. The new Tot Trot for ages 2-6 will be held as soon as the 5k is completed.

* Market Day on the Square -- Downtown Newnan merchants join in the Labor Day weekend fun as the sidewalk sales continue Saturday along with Market Day booths around the Coweta County Courthouse. The Market Day event organized by Main Street Newnan opens 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. or later depending on the crowd.

* Powers' Crossroads Country Fair and Art Festival -- 38th annual festival is Saturday through Monday/Labor Day. Coweta's signature Labor Day weekend event for almost four decades. Nestled on 26 acres of natural woodlands west of Newnan on Ga. Hwy. 34, nationally-recognized event is well-known for presenting handmade works of top artists and craftspeople from across the nation. Proceeds returned to the community through a variety of projects.

Festival hours 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Admission $7 adults, $5 seniors and military personnel, $3 children ages 5-12, and free for children 4 and under. Parking free, with shuttle service from the parking areas. Details: check www.newnan.com/powers call the Coweta Festivals office 770-253-2011.

* Powers' Crossroads Rising Star -- "American Idol" style singing competition at the Powers' festival. Three-round contest is Saturday, and the top three contestants will be invited to come back Monday for an encore performance. Grand prize winner will get $150, and the top contestant in each age group will receive $100. Registration deadline today. * 28th Moss Oak Plantation Festival -- Saturday through Monday/Labor Day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or later, at 80 Charlie B. Johnston Rd. and Highway 34 West, at Powers Crossroads west of Newnan. Admission and parking free. Handmade crafts, barbecue, inflatables for the kids. Tour 1790s stately mansion known as Moss Oak, $1. Listed on National Register of Historic Places -- and, yes, there are five spirits who reside there. Any non-profit groups desiring booth space may call Marilyn Curtis at 770-583-2555.

* Miss Coweta County/Miss Heard County pageants -- Sign-ups are also being taken for the newest addition to the Powers' festival entertainment -- the Miss Coweta County and Miss Heard County pageants, being held on Monday at the festival.
