Road near homeplace named for Cowetan killed in Vietnam War

By Winston Skinner

The Newnan Times-Herald

In the midst of a week that drew hundreds to events recalling the Vietnam War, a segment of road was named in memory of a Cowetan killed in that conflict.

Coweta native Warner Hughie was killed in action in 1970 in the Vietnam War. Hughie's ultimate sacrifice was honored recently by the Coweta County Board of Commissioners. "They designated a portion of Short Gordon Road as Warner Hughie Memorial Highway," said Patricia Palmer, county public affairs director.

"The stretch of road is along the family homeplace" where Hughie and his siblings grew up, Palmer said.

Ceremonies naming the road for the U.S. Army corporal were held Oct. 16. Coweta County Commissioner Tim Lassetter joined with members of Hughie's family to unveil the sign.

"Warner Hughie's sacrifice for our families, our community and our country, like too many others, should never be forgotten. Naming this road and placing these signs are small things we can do to help be certain that we always remember his sacrifice," said Lassetter.

The event "was kept small and private with only friends and family in attendance," Palmer said, "at the family's request." Friends at the ceremony included some from Hughie's childhood and even one who rode the bus with him on their first trip to Ft. Benning.

The fallen hero's sister, Lisa Hughie Kearns, and three brothers -- Bob, Jimmy and Oscar Hughie -- attended the ceremonies. Bob Hughie's son, Josh Hughie, joined Lassetter in unveiling the sign.

Hughie was killed March 12, 1970, and buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan. He was born Jan. 4, 1949.

The road naming ceremony took place the day events began to commemorate the visit of the Vietnam Memorial Moving Wal l-- "The Wall That Heals" -- at the Coweta County Fairgrounds.

The Coweta Commission on Veterans Affairs organized and oversaw the visit of the half-scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial. Events during the week including a one-man Broadway show titled "The Things They Carried"; a film, "In the Shadow of the Blade"; visits by students to the wall; a candlelight vigil; signing of books on the era by local authors; a ceremony recognizing the 132nd Helicopter Unit and 16th Transportation Detachment, which were officially adopted by the City of Newnan in 1968; a ceremony for families of the 23 Cowetans killed in Vietnam; opening and closing ceremonies.

Lisa,Jimmy,Oscar,& Bob.. I have been gone from Newnan for more than 35 years. After reading this,it for sure put a smile on my face. Warner was not a friend , but a brother, from 6th grade thru high school , if I was not @ your house, he was @ mine . When he passed , a part of me also died . I think of him often , and as Teresa said , I loved him also . This is a wonderful thing. Alan Boyd ..........

Still Loving Warner

I was engaged to be married to Warner. We were so in love with each other. Even though God has blessed me with a good life, I will never forget Warner and still often wonder what life would have been like had he not been killed. A song by the Supremes "Someday We'll Be Together" was out at that time. He bought me the album & sent it to me when he was about to be shipped to Vietnam and told me to always remember, That we would someday be together. I am so blessed to have been a part of his life and thank you for naming this road after him. I still love you, Warner!

Thanks to the commissioners for designating Short Gordon rd. in honor of Warner P Hughie for his ultimate sacrifice in the vietnam war.I knew most of the Hughie family. I was ten years old when Warner was killed and I remember the shock that went over the East Newnan area when we all herd the news.To name this road at the familys old home place in his honor is first class. Thanks again to the commissioners for this honor. and God Bless The Hughie Family.
