The Georgia Department of Labor reported this week that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in the new Three Rivers planning region rose to 13.2 percent in July, up one-tenth of one percentage point from a revised 13.1 percent in June.
That's higher than both the state unemployment rate of 10.3 percent and the national rate of 9.4 percent.
The number of initial unemployment claims in July in Coweta is also astoundingly high, at 1,438 claims, according to Newnan Career Center Manager Peter Ludlow.
"We had a definite bump up from July," Ludlow told the Newnan-Peachtree City Area Employer Committee at its most recent meeting. "These numbers are really unique."
In July 2008, initial filing for unemployment claims in Coweta County numbered only 688. That's a 109 percent year-to-year increase.
Initial claims in June 2009 were 1,155, so filings have increased 25 percent in just the past month.
In the Three Rivers area, the number of unemployed workers increased in July to 29,922, up 12,302 from July of 2008.
The former McIntosh Trail and Chattahoochee-Flint Regional Development Centers (RDCs) were recently merged into the new Three Rivers Regional Commission.
The Three Rivers RDC cosists of Butts, Carroll, Coweta, Heard, Lamar, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, Troup, and Upson counties.
Local groups are doing what they can to get job seekers back to work. The Georgia Department of Labor's Newnan Career Center and the Newnan-Peachtree City Area Employer Committee are teaming up with the Job Networking Ministry of the First United Methodist Church of Newnan to host a "Dress for Success" seminar at the A. Mitchell Powell Jr. Public Library on Sept. 10 at noon. The library is located at 25 Hospital Road in Newnan.
"Judith Carr and Becky Cochran of the employer committee are planning to speak," said librarian Kim Distel.
"We hope everyone will join us for this program led by local human resource experts," she said. "These guest speakers will discuss the importance of dressing for success, including its significance during the job interview process."
Those attending the program are invited to bring a sack lunch. Soft drinks and water will be provided.
Newnan First United Methodist Church Job Networking Ministry will hold its next meeting Sept. 8 at 6 p.m.
Meetings are always held the second Tuesday of each month in the Parish Hall of Newnan First United Methodist Church. The church is located at 33 Greenville St. in Newnan. The ministry can be reached by telephone at 770-253-7400.
Statewide, the number of payroll jobs in July decreased by 199,400, or 4.9 percent, from July 2008. The over-the-year losses came in manufacturing, trade, transportation, and warehousing, professional and business services, including temporary employment agencies and construction. Healthcare, private educational services, and local and state government education showed a combined increase of 19,600 jobs.
Last month, 493,748 unemployed Georgians were looking for work, an increase of 63.6 percent from July of 2008.
"December of 2007 is when this surge of unemployment filings really started for us," said Ludlow. There were 745 then, compared to "numbers in the 300s earlier in 2007."

I am finally glad you did some research and found the truth. The cumulative audience doesn't tell you how many people watch the show. It just says more cumalative audience. Ok 5 people watched cnn for 5 minutes where as 3 people watched fox for 2 hours. wow Fact is FOX is number 1 in all 10 catagories no matter what your heros at msnbc say. I took the facts right off the page unlike you that reads something and then make up what you want from what you read. Have you gotten your Obama tshirt yet from NBC? Can you say falling like a rock off of a cliff. Thats Obama and all of your liberal networks. Funny thing liberal talk radio and tv shows don't seem to do very well.

Congratulations on plagiarizing wikipedia. You copied word for word from the Fox News Channel Wiki page. WOW! Really shows the rest of us how to form a thought for ourselves.

Ratings do not tell you the actual number of how many people are watching. Like I said do a quick search on cumulative audience. Im sure you will not actually do the search though, because you are afraid of the answer.

I know fox news is awesome and the other channels should just listen to the song that says fox five is the best.....but this unemployment thing is horrible. I do wonder why people still post the now hiring signs when seemingly nobody can get a job.

The quarter ending jun 30 2009 foxnews shows held all 10 positions for cables news with an overall increase of 33 percent in viewerership. IT beat cnn and msnbc combined. Foxnews was rated third behind usa network and tnt. cnn and msnbc ranked 15th and 26th while battling each other for third place in cable news. The reason people watch fox longer because they are fair and balanced unlike cnn and msnbc.

No you are the rock its a proven fact that foxnews has the most viewers. You liberals just can't except the fact that your liberal news outlets stink.

Its like talking to a rock with you. The 'ratings' do not tell you how MANY people are watching. Fox fans watch longer, but there is not as many viewers as cnn. Do a search for 'news channel cumulative audience'. That will tell you how many people watch, not how long.
Posted by Adam Reuter at 8:20 PM
Then if they are like everyone else then its obvious that they have the most viewers. Proven fact.
Posted by Dash Riprock at 11:46 AM
Fox uses the Nielsen ratings. As does everyone else. They calculate by numbers watching times number of hours watched. Look it up.
Posted by Adam Reuter at 7:42 PM
I am sure Nbc abc and msnbc use the most modern methods. lolll Did you learn that from msnbc? Fox goes by how many millions watch the show. Which is more then the other networks combined.
Posted by Dash Riprock at 1:42 PM
They were sued by liberals and so they read the rights to the terroist at gitmo bay. Not out in the field.
Posted by Bubba B Bad at 10:41 AM
Do you have any idea how they calculate ratings? They multiply the number or viewers by the number of hours they watch. Fox has by far the OLDEST demographic. They have high ratings because these old folks fall asleep with the tv on.

Amazing fox is the highest rated news network in the nation and cam back up what they say with proven facts. You must be another one of those msnbc worshipers. Oh yes have you bought you obama t shirt from nbc? They are selling them.

You do realize it was the Bush admin who first started reading maranda rights to terrorists right?

Conventional wisdom regarding deficit spending suggests there is massive inflation in the future as a result of deficit spending (printing dollars and depositing them into banks) creating massive amounts of excess bank reserves for lending. With all the deposits and lending them out via fractional reserve lending all this money x 10 will soon be headed into the economy causing huge price spikes, a collapse of the dollar and even hyperinflation. The reality is this isn’t happening. The rates at which assets are falling and the growth of non-current loans are faster than the government will be spending. Banks are therefore still not well capitalized and many are actually insolvent unwilling and unable to lend. As long as deficit spending rate is slower than the faster and growing rates of non-performing loans and falling prices generalized inflation can’t happen. Richard is letting his fear deceive him. Fox News deceives and Richard believes.

We are now loosing more troops under your boy obama. Highest casualty rates in years. obama can't seem to do anything right. He is a looser and the whole nation is waking up to it.

What do you think sarin gas is? IT is a WMD. This PResident is a do nothing. Afghanistan and Iraq had their first elections under the Bush administration. Now under Obama the terroist are making a comeback in both Iraq and Afganistan. Fact is Obama is more concerned with the rights of a terroist then he is the military. Terroist know he is a weak do nothing President. LIke I said before thats why his poll numbers are falling like a rock. This country is waking up and taking a stand againist this idiot.
Posted by Dash Riprock at 3:17 PM
You're funny. You wanna talk about missing the mark? How about "we will be greeted as liberators" "mission accomplished" "the war will pay for itself" "Iraq has WMD" Rumsfeld thought the ground fighting would last 3 months at most, they didn't think we needed to focus as much on afghanistan. The difference here, is that i haven't lost 4,336 brothers and sisters in arms because the president was off on unemployment numbers.
Posted by Adam Reuter at 1:26 PM
President Obama stated in February that unemployment may go as high as 8.5%. Like his estimants for everything else, he severely missed the mark and many suffer the pain now and all will suffer later from runaway inflation due to insane deficit spending which will only lead huge tax increases just to maintain current services. Just think of this president as the 2nd coming of Jimmy Carter. What a mess of a 4 years that was and the next are starting to look like.
