Rash of thefts reported at Coweta schools

By Elizabeth Melville

The Newnan Times-Herald

Employees of the Coweta County School System have been advised to be careful with their personal property after thefts were reported at six schools in two days this week.

Sources reported that White Oak Elementary School, Canongate Elementary and Arnall Middle were targeted on Wednesday, and Newnan Crossing Elementary, Welch Elementary and Poplar Road Elementary were targeted Thursday.

Dean Jackson, public information officer for the school system, confirmed Friday that several thefts occurred at six schools over the course of Wednesday and Thursday. He said the incidents occurred after school when classrooms were vacant.

"Some teachers' items -- like pocketbooks and other belongings -- were stolen," said Jackson. "This is unusual because it involved different schools and it was a rash of them."

School Superintendent Blake Bass contacted both the Newnan Police Department and the Coweta County Sheriff's Office, and both agencies are investigating. Bass has talked to the principals and sent an e-mail to all school employees.

"We've warned the school system to be careful with their property," said Jackson. "As soon as we became aware, we let our employees know."

Anyone with information about the rash of thefts can contact the sheriff's office at 770-253-1502, or the police department at 770-254-2355.

Are you gonna pay for the cameras? The school can barely pay teachers.

inside-outside cameras

Were there cameras inside or outside the schools? If not, why not? Our children and school property (computers, moniters, laptops etc.) are at risk. What cars or trucks were lingering around the school doors. Who was seen carrying bags or trash cans out of these schools, on those days, after school hours? Parking lot cameras might be a good PTA project.

Be on the look out - this had to be an orchestrated, organized theft. Teachers and students - please keep your items locked up. It's sad but is a sign of the times.

This is not new...my older childrens items were constantly stollen at ECHS...my daughters expensive jacket has become missing at the elementry level and is not in the lost and found or at the facility. Sadly it's probably only going to get worse.....Parents, bust your kids when they come home w/something that isn't theirs!

Why were the doors unlocked! Surely they didn't enter through the front of the building!

Well the teacher should know all the little criminals they have in class, so they should lock their belongs up all the time. The parents teach the kids how to be criminals, and send them out to steal THEY find nothing wrong with it !!!

it's interesting to note that teacher's belongings get stolen and there is a write up about it in the paper. Student's belongings get stolen all the time, and there is nothing that can be done. Double standard? Student's belongings are just as important as teacher's. I hope they find the culprits.

Arnco-Sargent, too

This also happened at Arnco-Sargent Elementary per my teacher sis-in-law. Lock your belongings in any setting! A similar incident happened at work in a neighboring building in the Calumet office park. These crimes of opportunity will become more rampant. As times get tougher, even criminals work harder... or maybe they just work more. Either way, it's awful. So sorry for the victims. Stay vigilant folks!
