Authorities have confirmed a case of rabies in Newnan.
The incident involved a rabid fox found off Highwoods Parkway in the western portion of the SummerGrove subdivision off Lower Fayetteville Road. There were no humans affected by the disease, according to a statement issued by city officials.
On Friday, a SummerGrove resident reported seeing a fox in his yard acting strangely. Newnan Animal Warden Cyndi Hoffman went to the residence. The fox was caught on a restraining pole and euthanized. The body was sent to the lab, where results came back positive for rabies, said city officials.
"These vaccinations are critical to your families' and your pets' well-being," said Hoffman. "People do not realize the long and intense treatments needed for humans if they are bitten by a rabid animal. When symptoms occur, it is too late. Rabies has a 99 percent fatality rate for humans and animals."
Hoffman reminds residents of the city's leash law and vaccination law. Citations will be issued if residents are caught breaking these laws. The ordinances are available online at www.ci.newnan.ga.us .
Symptoms of rabies for animals and humans usually develop between 20 and 60 days after exposure. Rabid animals may become aggressive, combative and highly sensitive to touch and other kinds of stimulation. They may also become vicious. This is the "furious" form of rabies -- the kind traditionally associated with mad dogs.
There is also a "dumb" form of the disease in which the animal becomes lethargic, weak in one or more limbs, and unable to raise its head or make sounds because its throat and neck muscles are paralyzed. In both kinds of animal rabies, death occurs a few days after symptoms appear, usually from respiratory failure.
Rabies infection in humans begins with symptoms such as fever, cough or sore throat followed in several days by more serious and rapidly progressing symptoms, such as restlessness, hallucinations and seizures. The final stage is coma and death.

I to was ignorant of our county's animal control laws, until recently. I had to go Magistrate Court for not having proof of rabies on my dog. I was surprised at the large number of people there. Court is held the first and thrid Monday of the month. After paying $165. fine you don't want to go back

Ignorance...Funny, the ones complaining are talking about coweta animal control. The article above is solely about the City of Newnan and the ordinances there. I know for a FACT that the city of Newnan issues many citations regarding animal ordinances.

I dont see what the big deal is. If you have a problem with wild or uncontrolled unleashed domestic animals creating problems on YOUR property, just shoot them. I dont see what everybodys big problem is. Grow up and accept responsiblity for yourselves and take action instead of looking for Government solutions.

I live in Grantville which is part of Coweta County and we have unleashed animals EVERYWHERE. You cant drive 5 feet without one running out in front of you. Not to mention a pack of dogs that's been terrorizing my trash for weeks. We have begged for someone to catch them but guess what, COWETA DOESNT CARE. Just another example of how our county is going under.

They do issue citations, if you violate again, you go to court, and you have to pay a fine, and if you violate again, you spend time in jail. So you are just two persons who think you know it all.

Citations will be issued. Yeah right! I have NEVER seen ANYONE issued a citation for anything animal related in coweta.

The county animal control folks will not, repeat, will not, of their own volition, issue citations for animals not on a leash.

I caught several on my property and tied them up and called the Grantville City Hall who sent out the guys to pick up the dogs. They told me if the dog tries to harm my children to shoot it.
