Police arrest Miss Pearl's target following Dec. 2 incident

By John Winters

The Newnan Times-Herald

Young Miss Pearl can rest easy now.

On Wednesday, Newnan Police arrested the gunman who dared to break into her home back in December.

It was about 2 a.m. on Dec. 2 when the gunman showed up at her house on Pinson Street. But Pearl, despite being only 17, showed no fear -- grabbing the suspect by the leg. With her mouth.

Some explanation might be in order, especially when you factor in that Pearl is 17 months old, not 17 years old, and is the family's pet dog.

Pearl is part of the Herring family, but in a special way, according to Janneth Herring. It's probably best to refer to her as a puppy.

"She keeps an eye on the whole family," Herring said. "She's part of the family."

The unlucky individual who had his leg meet up with Pearl's mouth was Christopher Deon Barner, 22, who is now a guest at the Coweta County Jail with a reservation for armed robbery with a firearm, according to jail records.

Police were called to the Herring's residence and were met by Cedric Herring, Janneth's son, who said he heard a noise and came out of his room.

He then saw an unknown male with a gun. The two began wrestling over the gun on the front porch, according to a police report.

Janneth Herring then came out and also grabbed the gunman, which led to the magazine falling out of the gun.

And then Pearl was invited to join in.

The suspect, Barner, fled after somehow separating himself from Pearl's mouth and ran toward Smith Street. He was arrested Wednesday.

Once outside, the Herrings noticed another man, Roderick Walker, 17, standing next to their vehicle. Walker was later arrested at his nearby residence and charged with being party to a crime and aggravated assault robbery, records show.

Authorities found the gun magazine and recovered a .40-caliber bullet back at the residence.

Oh, and Pearl is a black-and-white pit bull.
