Planning under way for county Republican convention in March

By Rebecca Leftwich

The Newnan Times-Herald

Coweta's Republicans began shaping the 2012 election, holding their precinct mass meeting at the Newnan Carnegie Library Saturday.

Mass meetings, or precinct caucuses, are the beginning point of the convention process. There, local Republicans choose precinct leaders to establish the basic party structure and leadership for the next election year, according to www.georgiayr.com. Delegates and alternates were chosen for the March 10 Coweta County Republican Convention, where leadership for the county party will be selected. That convention also will be held at the Carnegie Library.

Peter Elliot said it was important for him to be at Saturday's meeting because "we need to get rid of the old guard."

"We need to get rid of the 'What can you do for me?' thinking and replace it with 'How can you leave me alone and let me do for myself?' thinking," Elliot said.

Third District Republicans will meet at Warm Springs April 14, and the Georgia Republican Convention is May 18-19 in Columbus. Republicans will converge on Tampa, Fla. Aug. 27-30 for their national convention.

March 6 marks the Presidential Preference Primary, the first step in the process of electing the President of the United States for registered voters of every -- or no -- party.

"We end up getting the government we vote for," Elliot said.
