Newnan's roundabout has been the scene of one minor accident after all.
Newnan Police Chief Buster Meadows contacted The Times-Herald to say a minor accident had been reported on April 20.
Meadows said he was contacted by the victim in the accident and went to double check the records after an update on the roundabout appeared in Monday's Times-Herald.
The wreck occurred when someone entered the roundabout too soon, striking the victim's car on the right rear bumper. There was only minor damage, and no charges were filed, Meadows said.
The at-fault vehicle was entering the roundabout from Lower Fayetteville Road when it tapped a car going through the roundabout, Meadows said.
Despite the accident, "I'm still 100 percent for the roundabout," Meadows said.
Newnan Councilwoman Cynthia Jenkins, who was one of the most outspoken opponents of the roundabout project, said she has been pleasantly surprised by how well the roundabout has worked.
"I had a few concerns about the volume of student traffic, but it has worked surprisingly well," said Jenkins, who drives through the roundabout several times a day.
Jenkins, like many other Cowetans, said her only real experience with roundabouts was "the horrible one in Whitesburg. If it were going to be like that, I knew it wouldn't be something the city wanted," she said. "It turned out we had a good design."
Her biggest concern was with pedestrians trying to cross through the roundabout, because traffic never stops.
"I haven't seen a large volume of people walking just yet. I think a large part of it has to do with the weather," she said.
"I just don't know how pedestrians will fare out there. I hope people are super safe and nothing happens with that either," she said.
"Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised that it works as good for them as it does for cars."

The whole point of a round about is not to stop.

How can a Roundabout be a bad idea...you think this one is bad...you should see the ones overseas that work wonders with large amounts of cars...I have been on one in Africa and India that is at least 7 cars deep all around. You just have to learn how to use them. I think the US needs more of them. Any large intersection would be great with one; Bullsboro and the Bypass...54/74. I saw put more. How many intersections in this county had only one minor accident in the first 6 months...probably not many!

The victim probably got hit from behind because he/she was the one who didn't know how to drive the roundabout.

So Mr. Johnson you prefer the old method of the stop sign where traffic backed up for a half mile or more versus no wait?
