Newnan's dangerous intersections

By John Winters

The Newnan Times-Herald

Somewhere around 40 percent to 50 percent of the traffic accidents within the city limits of Newnan -- both in terms of numbers and also severity -- can be pinpointed to five intersections.

At the request of The Newnan Times-Herald, the Newnan Police Department provided statistics on traffic accidents in 2011.

That request included highlighting the most dangerous intersections -- defined by most serious injuries -- and those intersections with the highest number of accidents.

The top five most dangerous intersections or highways:

• Bullsboro Drive at Interstate 85 southbound ramps,

• Bullsboro at Newnan Crossing Bypass,

• Lower Fayetteville Road at Newnan Crossing Bypass,

• Greenville Street at Corinth Road,

• East Broad Street at Pinson Street.

• • •

The top five accident intersections or highways:

• Bullsboro at I-85 southbound ramps,

• Bullsboro at Highway 34 Bypass,

• LaGrange Street near Newnan High School,

• Newnan Crossing Bypass just behind Burger King at the entrance to the Target Shopping Center,

• Jackson Street at Clark Street.

It would be nice if the city would fix the curve on sprayberry rd. Peoples come around the curve to fast and wreck. especially when wet.

i constantly worry that my grandchildren aren't safe because of the deep ruts along this street. People who live in Summer Grove fly down Sullivan from 4-7pm coming home from work at speeds of 60 & 70 mph, i have often come close to getting hit just trying to get out of the neighborhood. I also noticed so many of the roads have deep ruts on the sides still, YOUR HIGHWAY DEPT IS RIPPING THE CITIZENS OF COWETA OFF; ONCE AGAIN, "OUR ROADS DOWN HERE DON'T LOOK LIKE YOUR SILLY PIGTRAILS UP THERE!

SYNCHRONIZED LIGHTS?

What ever happened to "synchronizing" the trafic lights? Months ago, this paper reported that this was to be done in the near future. What happened? When will this be accomplished?

Also on shennadoah blvd in the middle of the road, where people try to cross to get to the newnan schook of gymnastics. Several times Ive had to stop when a cars shot accross and its rear end is sticking out blocking the left land. Have seen a ton of accidents here. Need to block off and stop people crossing.

coweta county roads

coweta county should come south and learn how to properly build roads, and shoulders. I am so glad I no longer live in coweta, there is way too much traffic on the few pathetic roads you have here. I can't understand what all your tax money goes for, Houston county has built more roads in the past six years, than I ever saw in the twenty I lived in Coweta, who's pockets are lined?

I Love Mary Ann II

Mary Ann's comments are so correct - for Newnan's teenage drivers, Bullsboro Drive is their drag raceway. From what I've seen, the majority of the accidents involve at least one teenage driver. And there have been several fatalities. Reducing the speed limit to 45 mph would help.

Yeah changing the speed limit and not the bad habits is a sure fix. NOT!! It's like the speed limit being 55 on I285 where the average speed is closer to 75.
Give your undivided attention to the road when you are behind the wheel!

its not the intersections, its the people driving.

All fair points but still no solution...

When is traffic even light enough to reach the 55 mph limit that you speak of Ed R? The only time I can sustain that speed on Bullsboro is late evening after the rush hour. The biggest issue causing all of the accidents is that people here have a tendency to tailgate/following too close,if you check the figures I bet you 2 out of three of accidents are rearenders....especially at I-85 and Bullsboro, so even if the speed limit is lowered that won't eliminate the primary cause of these accidents. People just got to learn to pay attention that's all, and police have to start cracking down on tailgaters and aggressive drivers.

"Me first" is the worst

I'd bet a Dunkin' Donut that an overwhelming majority of those wrecks can be linked to people running red lights. It amazes me that there isn't constant police presence at the Walmart intersection to catch these idiots who see a red light and mentally note they have 5 seconds before the opposing cars come as they race through.
Also, if everyone let off their brakes at the same time as they see the light turn green, we'd get a few more cars through each light cycle. Irks me to wait 20 seconds after the light turns green before I can even start moving due to the accumulated lag ahead of me.

Reduce the Speed Limit to 45 on 34

1/31/2012

Link To This Comment

Only an Idiot would set a speed limit in the congested areas of GA 34 at 55 MPH. All of the counties around us have posted speeds of 45 MPH on their busy 4-lanes. What do you expect when traffic is going 55+ MPH in front of Wal-Mart, Lowes, Home Depot, I-85 Interchange, the By-Pass Interchange, etc? The traffic never slows down for "conditions" per the law. Sun, Rain, Snow, here they go - 55+ MPH. One should live on GA 34 and try getting across or turn without getting splattered and then one might understand. It is Stupid to allow traffic to run 55 MPH on that road. Stupid. No other way to describe it. Not incompetent; Stupid.

Mary Ann you took the words out of my mouth!
The Bullsboro 34 intersection needs to be like the Walmart light where the people turning left dont go at the same time.
The Pinson Street light needs to have a delay put in so that after the light goes red there are a few seconds before the other lane goes.
Overall I believe the driving test should include a larger area and be alot more strict. Driving is not a right so please be confident in what you are doing before you get behind the wheel.

Just some friendly advice

1/30/2012

Link To This Comment

People need to learn how to drive! 1) Go the speed limit in the right and left lanes. 2) don't pull out onto the highway going 20 miles/hr when there is a car coming at 55 miles/hour or more and then expect people to slow up! Use your brain. 3) Also if you would step on the 'gas' pedal once the light turns green instead of playing with your cell phone or slapping your child in the backseat, that would be nice. 4) Turn on your headlights! thank you!

The Eternal Workzone AKA Newnan Bypass

Not shocked that Bullsboro at Newnan Bypass is on here. Considering the chaotic mess it has been in for the past few years, maybe if they actually finish work there the safety might improve, I hope my children can see it one day because it doesn't seem like it is getting done in any of our lifetimes at the pace it's moving. How did they get two inept contactors in a row? I love how the NTH has chased down answers on this project.

Dangerous Intersection left out

1/30/2012

They forgot one intersection. Jefferson St at Sprayberry Road. You cant see past the cars that are turning right, people drive fast on that street so you cant turn left. The need a 3 way stop sign there. Its a bad intersection all together.
