Newnan Police looking to purchase new camera system

By Elizabeth Melville

The Newnan Times-Herald

Newnan City Council will consider whether or not to spend nearly $184,000 for a high visibility crime suppression camera system for the Newnan Police Department at Tuesday's 2:30 p.m. meeting at city hall.

The current system has 22 cameras, but the new system would allow the department to add up to 60 camera sites within the city of Newnan over time, including some around the interstate, according to Chief Douglas L. "Buster" Meadows.

The request to replace and upgrade the camera system was sent out in November and the city received three bids that were all over budget. The police department worked with the low bidder -- Wind Channel Communications -- to bring the cost down closer to budget, according to the chief.

"These cameras have been a big help in observing intersections and crime areas where we know drugs were being sold," said Meadows.

The project -- which would cost a total of $183,982 -- would be funded from drug condemnation funds and $75,430 from the federal Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.

I read this and all I see is negative... if you don't like the idea then maybe you need to attend a meeting and bring your ideas to the members of the board... oh what's that you don't have a better idea that is doable... I thought not.

Someone needs to ask how many of the cameras the city currently has are actually working.I'll go ahead and tell you that the answer is zero.
None of the cameras are working now we're going to spend over $180,000 for what?
If you don't keep the cameras functioning what good are they?

How about telling us what the current system has done for us before we talk about a new system. I mean can we say the outdated system has taken $1 million dollars in drugs off Newnan streets, 100 guns, and 50 bad guys? Are there any figures to report?

Paul, regardless of whether it is "free money" or not, there is a limit on how much is available, otherwise known as a "budget". Did you go to school in Georgia?

I like the idea of camaras especially for traffic. You donot not need an officer risking his life and others over speeders. Also where violence might be an issue this would be a deterrent. Drugs would move to another level and off that given area which in long run help bring stabilty to the area.

Start adding in extra fees for fines of certain crimes to help pay for this with money as it comes into the system instead of any kind of finacing. Or else don't do it. Pay as you go to get what the city or county needs.

Red Light Camera's

Red Light Camera's solve "accidents". Believe it on not some folks lie. When no witnesses stop to give an independent account of what really happened, it is up to you to argue with your and their insurance company. With so many new sidewalks and crosswalks being installed they can save lives by reminding motorists that another life is not worth running a red light. Your conspiracy theory won't save people.

The watchers couldn't stand up to being the watched in many cases. That is why certain things get classified as personnel matters.

Great. What a great way to waste money and give a false since of security. Criminals will just alter their behavior. Then the gov will have to come up with another jusitfication for these cameras. So they will eventually, in 10 to 15 years, start monitoring for antisocial behavior.

The drug agents are going above and beyond for the city. The city owes them gratitude for their hard work. No drug agents have performed better in the history of the department. The arrests and seizures are worth their extra efforts and commitment.

Im not sure what Im reading! How can buying something with money that comes from "free" sources be over Budget? When we read in the paper how Money was siezed from illigal sources, who can that money be included in any Budget? Im not sure I would care how much something would cost if the money was free in the first place!

The cameras are a great idea. I think an even better idea would be to have a motorcycle unit. There are many times, during high traffic, that the motor units would be extremely useful and much more effective than the cars. Motorcycles would also save gas. They wouldn't have to cost the city a lot of money because there are several companies that offer grants to Police Departments. It's certainly worth researching.
