The Newnan Lions Club had Newnan Mayor Keith Brady as their guest speaker at their recent meeting.
Brady presented various facts about the city of Newnan, including the current budget and the fact that Newnan has no long-term debt and maintains a reserve equal to half the operating budget. The status reflects the city's good financial management -- especially in the tough economic situation of the past couple of years.
The mayor also gave the club an update on the Carnegie Library and the honor system for checking out a book.
Other topics discussed were the ongoing Coweta County Courthouse renovation, street intersection improvements, and the decline in building permits in the city in recent years.
During the audience question and answer time, member praise for the "round-about" intersection at Greison Trail and East Broad Street was unanimous and there was considerable discussion about a proposed bill in the Georgia legislature to limit city police on state and national highways.
Lions Clubs are known for their work in sight conservation. Local Lions collect used eyeglasses, hearing aids and cell phones at several different drop-off points throughout the county.
The eyeglasses are recycled for the benefit of disadvantaged people in all parts of the world. The Newnan Club also assists with the cost for eye exams and glasses and hearing aids for disadvantaged individuals in Coweta County.
The Lions Club supports many charitable causes, including One Roof, Alliance for Children, Georgia Lighthouse, Camp for Blind, Southeastern Guide Dogs and Leader Dogs for the Blind.
The Lions meet at noon each first Tuesday at Golden Corral restaurant. Contact Dunk Hale at 678-876-1328 if you are interested in joining the Lions Club (the world's largest service club). Check the club Web site at www.newnancowetalionsclub.webs.com .
