New wave of hiring at Kia

By Jeff Bishop

The Times-Herald

Kia is now hiring for its second production line at its new West Point plant. That's good news for Coweta County, even if the county hasn't attracted the spin-off industries it had hoped to land, Coweta County Development Authority officials said.

"From a Tier 1 supplier standpoint, Coweta County is just too far north" to attract those suppliers, said Greg Wright, president of the development authority.

"Maybe we'll still have some opportunities down the road for some second or third tier suppliers," said Wright.

"But I wouldn't say we missed out on Kia," he said. When the company ramps up its production, which is expected to be in the neighborhood of 300,000 vehicles a year, that's definitely going to have a positive economic impact locally, he said.

"Of course, they won't start out at that production level," he said. "And maybe when they start to ramp up, maybe that's when Coweta can work to get some of those third tier and maybe even some second tier suppliers."

Kia Motors, which began making Sorento cross-over vehicles last month, announced Tuesday it will hire another 1,200 factory workers for a second production line.

Hiring begins in early 2010. By year's end, Kia will employ nearly 2,500 people at its $1 billion factory along Interstate 85. The production and maintenance workers will earn between $14.90 and $20.80 an hour.

Wright said Coweta's big advantage is still the fact that I-85 "goes right through the middle of the county."

"So people who want to go to work for Kia will have only a 45-minute drive from Newnan, and even less of a commute from Grantville," he said. "And I think some folks who will work at Kia would want to live in Newnan because of the amenities that we have here, compared to some other communities.

"But the interstate is a tremendous benefit for us," he said.

Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia Inc. is now accepting online applications for hourly jobs at the Kia automobile plant in West Point. Any computer with Internet access may be used to complete and submit an application.

The Georgia Department of Labor is assisting Kia applicants in this process. Individuals who need Internet access or other assistance completing the Kia application may receive such assistance at any of GDOL's 53 career centers, including the Newnan Career Center in Shenandoah Industrial Park.

Only one application will be accepted within a 12-month period.

Job seekers may apply for only one of the following three hourly positions:

Production Team Member (PTM)

The PTM performs various work station, line assembly or production support operations to mass produce automobile components into completed automobiles. This position assembles or supports assembly of components and sub-components by performing any combination of repetitive tasks according to specifications and quality requirements in hand-to-hand method of production. The PTM also performs manual or automated operation of machinery or tools such as hand tools; power tools; production fixtures; and assembly, painting, stamping, welding and conveyance equipment.

Maintenance Team Member (MTM)

The MTM performs highly diversified duties in industrial and facilities maintenance functions to maintain automobile production, process and facility equipment according to safety, predictive, and productive maintenance requirements. The MTM also provides support in a variety of industrial or manufacturing technology skill areas including electrical, electronics, hydraulics, mechanical, motor controls/PLC, pneumatics, robotics, welding, and other industrial processing systems. The MTM conducts machine setup and installation, problem diagnosis, troubleshooting and repair and preventive maintenance service.

Die Maintenance Team Member (DMTM)

The DMTM performs various tool and die maintenance functions to maintain stamping transfer dies, including providing technical support to CNC/machining, fabrication, and tool and die operations. The DMTM also conducts tool and die troubleshooting and repair, changeover and die setup, and miscellaneous fixture design and manufacture.

The DMTM conducts setup, programming, and/or operation of various press, tooling, machining, or milling equipment. The DMTM will also have maintenance and repair responsibilities on extra-large (Class-A) surface dies.

Funny seems like the conservative are winning elections and the revolt has already started againist the radical left wing liberals. Next year we will say bye bye to allot of liberals in congress. It is a proven fact blacks came out and voted in record numbers and its not hateful logic just facts. Don't forget about the millions involved in the tea parties of course your liberal news outlets will not show it. Its also a proven fact white did not come out in record numbers to vote for obama. But keep believing your liberal outlets.

Dash, White people came out in record numbers to vote for him too so again your hateful logic is flawed. I am sorry Dash that America is changing and you are being left behind. I am not sorry that the conservative movement has alienated everyone but angry old men like you. BTW Hispanic Americans are going to come out in record numbers this election cycle to vote for a Liberal.

You might want to check your history again. Let me know when obama starts leading and not playing celebrity. The stimulus plan by obama was not needed except to payback acorn and his union buddies. Good question about when the hating will end the liberals had no problem hating Bush but that seems to be ok till it comes to obama then we have the double standard. To chippy the blacks voted in record numbers never seen before and yes my black friends in the military who I still keep in touch with think Obama is an idiot.

Handouts? Bailouts?

I am so amused at people blaming Obama and democrats for giving people a free ride. Unemployment benefits were the same under the Bush administration. The stimulus plan was begun under the Bush administration. The Kia plant was built with big handouts under the Perdue administration. People seem caught up in hating and never at analyzing where their own party behaves in the same way as their opponents. When is the hating going to end and we can respect our president, elected by our people (of all colors) to lead our nation?

DT.... Best of luck on your Kia job search. When you DO get hired, please be sure to bring in a copy of your hire letter so that we can read it to Dash. That is if he takes off his blinders. It should be noted that the Hollywood community was fully in support of Mr O. They don't seem to have any problem finding work. Question: Is OBAMA an acronym for Office of BAd MAnagement?

The OVERWHELMING majority of Americans.... Democrats always carry the Black vote by a huge margin so don't insult them by saying they didn't vote the issues. What would your Black Air force friends think of you now.

Haaaaa!!! Every comment on this article so far, has NOTHING to do WITH the article itself, so I'll add an opinion that dont apply too! You all sound like a double dose of Mydol is much needed...But Dash RIprock, I must respond to your comment because I dont know who you've worked for, but every job I've had...has unemployment insurance that pays you when a lay off hits ya when least expected! Think I jumped straight up out of bed at sunrise to rush out & look for a job 1st thing? WRONG!!! I didnt run to the welfare office either!! Unemployment Benefits does not fall into the "lookin for a hand out" catagory hun..God dont accept applications for the position of a Judge. He's the only one we need! Now, back to Kia's hiring?? Great news! Gone to apply online! Wish me luck!!

Stacy is correct in wondering how professional reporting can't always seem to include ALL pertinent information in their stories. Northwestern school of Journalism 101... Who, where, what, when, why not whatever. Get the story first, but get it right.

Some people don't quite understand satirical comments. Not all people are as computer literate as we are. Those that aren't should get themselves to the library and use their resources to look up various job search engines. Although I am a retiree I still work part time at an electronic/technical job. Keeps me out of the wife's hair. In the meantime, rather than blame the current President or even the last 4 or 5 leaders why not go back to the beginning with the first G.W.---Papa Washington? (he said with tongue in cheek)

An overwhelming majority of voters voted for him so he would take care of them? What about all of the middle class that voted for him some say 75% of the middle class. Dont they just want a competant government that can get us out of our multiple emergencies. Don't you think they voted for him because they want the government to be as effective as the government we all grew up with. I will tell you I am a moderate and all I want is competant government the size and shape doesnt matter to me. I do wish that all jobs down here were as good as these Kia jobs. Georgia is in the bottom 10 states in terms of median wages. I think that is a real problem and we should do something about it.

Why would they want to work when the gov will take care of them. I know people who are drawing unemployment and are not trying to find work. They are going to ride that gravy train as long as they can. Thats how Obama got elected the people that voted for him thought they were going to get a free ride.

At least that Obama supporter PROBABLY knows how to spell PROBABLY. Probably didn't go to a gument school. Besides, what in blazes does Obama have to do with a person's not being able to use the internet to find something. A lot of us are speed-bumps on the info highway. Maybe Dash and Creighton could volunteer their talents to teach a course on internet useage to us road-kills on the internet highway. hmmmm??
