Speaking recently to the White Oak Golden K Kiwanis Club in Newnan was Billy Robbins, office manager of Newnan Office for the Georgia Department of Veteran Affairs.
Joining Robbins was Rob Johnson, also a field service officer for the department.
Robbins grew up in New Orleans and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-1971. After discharge he worked for Delta Air Lines from 1973-2003, beginning in New Orleans and transferring to Atlanta area in 1995.
In 2004 Robbins was hired by the state of Georgia and settled in the Department of Veteran affairs in 2006.
In his presentation he gave the audience a brief overview of how Georgia works in conjunction with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Washington in assisting veterans and their spouses in obtaining benefits and services which they deserve and to which they are entitled.
According to Robbins, there are many services that our veterans have need of but do not know how to make application for or may not be aware of the availability.

Robbins gave the group some good examples where elderly veterans or their elderly spouses can receive monetary benefits to help them pay for nursing home care.

Also, there are numerous health care benefits available that some of our veterans are eligible for but which require documentation — his department helps guide them through.

Robbins and his wife, Gail, have been married 43 years. They have two sons: Randy, a teacher at East Coweta High School, and Brad, a chiropractor in Geismar, Louisiana.
