Motorcyclist critical after crash

By Elizabeth Richardson

The Times-Herald

A traffic accident closed down a portion of Interstate 85 just north of Coweta County Friday morning for more than an hour and sent one man to the hospital in critical condition.

The accident occurred just after 8 a.m. near the Coweta-Fulton county line just north of Exit 56/Collinsworth Road, according to Assistant Fire Chief Stephan Hood of the Fairburn Fire Department.

An unidentified motorcyclist collided with a four-door sedan. The man on the motorcycle was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center, where he was said to be in critical condition, according to Hood.

The accident closed down northbound and southbound lanes in order for the air ambulance to land. Traffic was reportedly backed up in the northbound lanes four miles to Exit 51/Sharpsburg-McCollum.

Coweta County Fire and EMS assisted in the response.

The accident occurred in an area where construction is under way to widen I-85. There was no information whether or not construction had an impact on the accident. Speed limits have been lowered to 50 mph in the construction zones, and motorists are urged to slow down during construction, which is expected to continue until the end of 2009.
