Mother says Newnan child, 7, recuperating from brain injuries

By Winston Skinner

The Newnan Times-Herald

Sierra Arnold, the 7-year-old pedestrian injured while crossing Sewell Road on Thursday, sustained brain injuries but has made some progress. according to her mother.

Aimee Jackson, Arnold's mother, said the girl remains in the intensive care unit at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta -- Egleston. "She did suffer more injuries than just a broken leg," Jackson said.

The girl, who finished first grade last year at Atkinson Elementary School, was fitted with a cervical collar -- a device often used to support the neck and head after an injury -- following Thursday's accident when she was struck by a car.

"They finally took that off," Jackson said of the cervical collar. Jackson said her daughter is not able to talk with her at present.

Jackson said Arnold was crossing Sewell Road at its intersection with Spence Avenue on Thursday with the girl's grandmother "and several other relatives." Arnold was struck by a 2003 Cadillac DeVille driven by Steve Pierce, 52, of Newnan about 11:30 a.m., according to Sgt. Lance Yearta of the Newnan Police Department.

Both Yearta and Jackson stated the pedestrians did not see the Cadillac because of a truck turning at the intersection. "There have been several witnesses who have contacted me," Jackson said.

Arnold was airlifted by helicopter ambulance from Newnan High School to the Atlanta hospital. Yearta said evidence did not indicate Pierce "was traveling at an excessive speed."

Jackson said her daughter's medical costs are not an issue. She said some friends have placed containers in area businesses seeking donations to help the family with parking and other expenses while at Egleston.
