New speed limit signs are now in place on Camp Street in Moreland, and now the town council's attention is focused on improving Church Street's intersection with U.S. Hwy. 29.
"The new speed limit signs have been installed by the county," announced Moreland Mayor Jeff Burgess at the Tuesday night council meeting.
"We want to say a big 'thank you' to them," Burgess said. The cost of the signs was $247.
The council agreed to move $8,524 from the SPLOST account to the general fund to spend on improvements to Camp Street.
Consultant Wayne Smith of D.W. Smith Design Group on McDonough suggested that the council may want to apply to the Department of Transportation for a grant to help fund the Church Street and U.S. Hwy. 29 intersection improvements. The grant deadline is Dec. 31.
"We want to see if we can get those funds from the state," said Burgess. "Of course, there are no guarantees."
Preliminary plans for the intersection improvements have been reviewed by DOT staff.
Smith's proposal calls for realigning Church Street's access to the highway. "The current street comes in at a very severe angle," Smith told the council at a previous meeting.
His proposal is to rework that end of Church Street so that a 90-degree angle is formed -- forcing vehicles to slow to a near stop before turning off U.S. 29 and increasing sight distance for motorists exiting Church Street.
"It's really going to help the safety, especially for pedestrians," Smith said. Smith said the changes would amount to "a definite safety enhancement" and that DOT funding might be available to help with the project.
Smith said it is hard to determine the potential cost of the Church Street project, but it could be about $40,000. The council approved Smith's $150 hourly fee to apply for the DOT grant.
