According to the provisions of the Moreland city charter, there will be no need for a special called election to fill the unexpired term of the late Moreland Mayor Kendal Hurst, who died earlier this week.
Hurst will be remembered at funeral services Sunday at 4 p.m. at Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Burial will be in Luthersville Cemetery with military honors.
According to Town Attorney Mark Mitchell, Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Burgess will assume the duties of mayor, until Mayor-elect Josh Evans takes over the position in January.
"The charter sets all of this out; and in the case, it has sort of taken care of itself," said Mitchell.
Since no one qualified to run against Josh Evans for the post, he will automatically assume the position at the first meeting in January 2009.
"Since there's already an election called and scheduled for November, there is no need for another one," said Mitchell. "That election will go forward, as scheduled.
"In the interim," said Mitchell, "Jeff Burgess will serve as mayor for the remainder of the year. Then Josh Evans will become mayor at the first meeting in January."
Burgess has already accepted those duties, Mitchell said.
"He understood that, by accepting the position of mayor pro tem, that he must assume the duties of mayor in a case like this," said Mitchell.
Evans said the mayor's passing is "sad news" for the town.
"I was called by Mayor Pro Tem Jeff Burgess, and he told me of the mayor's passing," said Evans.
Hurst was born Sept. 1, 1942 in Meriwether County. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had lived in Moreland for 43 years.
Hurst's body was found in a remote area off Meadows Boone Road just east of Luthersville on Thursday morning. Authorities with the Meriwether County Sheriff's Office don't suspect foul play. Hurst's body was taken Thursday to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Atlanta crime lab for autopsy.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. tonight.
