Josh Evans will be Moreland's next mayor.
Evans, who currently serves on the board of aldermen, was the only candidate to qualify for the mayor's race.
Qualifying for municipal elections in Moreland, Senoia and Haralson wrapped up Wednesday at noon. Shortly thereafter, Coweta County Elections Superintendent Jane Scoggins was submitting ballot information to the ballot builder and printer.
Things had to be done quickly because of changes in federal early voting laws. Under those laws, the deadline for having ballots ready fell before state-set dates for municipal qualifying. Coweta was able to forestall any problems by being prepared early.
Evans will be joined by returning alderwoman Karen King, and new alderman James "Jay" Hurst. Hurst, the son of current mayor Ken Hurst, is filling the seat vacated by Evans.
In Haralson, there will be a contested election for a seat on the city council. Mike Callahan and Bonita "Bo" Rosemas qualified for the seat currently held by Alton Pate, who is not seeking reelection.
Mayor Ted Bateman is unopposed for his next term.
In Senoia, only incumbent councilmen Bobby Graham and Maurice Grover qualified.
Potential candidates who missed qualifying can run as write-in candidates. However, time is of the essence.
According to Scoggins, a write-in candidate has five days from the date of the close of qualifying to submit a notice of intent to run as a write-in candidate to The Times-Herald. The notice must run within that five-day period, which, in this case, would be Monday's paper. However, the advertising deadline for that date has already passed.
Candidates interesting in running as write-ins should contact Scoggins as soon as possible, at 678-854-0015, to discuss the possibility of meeting deadlines. The Times-Herald can be contacted at 770-253-1576.
The Haralson races will be decided in the November general election. If no write-in candidates qualify in Senoia and Moreland, those races will not be on the November ballot.
