Members of the Clyde Thomason Detachment 1325, Marine Corps League raised the flag for the annual Memorial Day program at Veterans Memorial Plaza.
The detachment is named in honor of Sgt. Clyde A. Thomason, an Atlanta native who was the first enlisted Marine to be awarded the Medal of Honor in World War II. Thomason was killed in action on Aug. 18, 1942 on Makin Island.
A highlight of the Memorial Day program was the performance of the Madras Middle School Honors Chorus under the direction of Erin Walton. They sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Amazing Grace" -- often singing in an a capella harmony that was flawless.
The students also sang "God Bless America," inviting the crowd of about 500 to join them.
"Wow," said Dick Stender, master of ceremonies, after their first song. "That was special."
"You really touched our hearts," added G. D. Hendrix, National Chaplain, Sons of the American Legion.
Thomas Yeager, winner of the 2010-11 Voice of Democracy contest, led the pledge of allegiance. Winston Skinner, a minister who is also an editor at The Times-Herald, gave the benediction.
Hendrix said the Memorial Day programs at Veterans Memorial Plaza "get better and better every year."
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2667 has sponsored the annual programs for 22 years. For the past 12 years, the programs have "honored all by honoring one" -- remembering a specific Cowetan who died while serving in the military.
"In Newnan, we mourn and remember on Memorial Day," Stender said. "I hope we will forever keep these traditions."
