MLK Parade delayed until 2 p.m.

Newnan’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade, originally scheduled to begin at noon today, has been delayed until 2 p.m.

Due to heavy rain conditions, the parade’s coordinators with Newnan Chapter 483 Order of the Eastern Star have decided to delay the parade — it has not been cancelled, said Co-Chairperson Sister Margaret Thompson. Because the band did not want to get their uniforms and instruments wet, the parade is now scheduled for 2 p.m. when the rainy weather is expected to subside.

According to Weather.com, the hourly forecast in Newnan shows light rain at 1 p.m., mostly cloudy at 2 p.m. and mostly sunny at 3 p.m. Temperatures are expected to be around 61 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

The parade’s route will remain the same. It will begin at Newnan High School, travel north on LaGrange Street through the Court Square downtown, continue on Jackson Street and turn on Wesley Street, ending in Willie Lynch Park.

Participants’ parade floats will also be judged at Newnan High School prior to the parade.
