Local water supply probably won't be shared with Atlanta

By Winston Skinner

The Newnan Times-Herald

State officials could allocate water in local reservoirs to the city of Atlanta, but Newnan Utilities officials said Tuesday that is not likely.

"I don't think we'd be a target," said Dennis McEntire, general manager of the city-owned utility. McEntire responded to questions from Dianne Parker about that possibility.

Parker is one of the members of the Newnan Water, Sewerage and Light Commission that governs Newnan Utilities. The board met Tuesday at the Newnan Utilities headquarters on Sewell Road.

There have been concerns about providing water for the state's largest city following a court ruling that limits the amount of time Atlanta can continue to draw water from Lake Lanier north of the city. That situation has concerned many officials, "especially if the judge's ruling stands," McEntire noted.

"The state owns the water," noted Ed Strong, water operations director for Newnan Utilities. State officials have the right to use any water anywhere in the state.

Still, McEntire said it is not likely the state would take water from Coweta. "While we have excess water here, it's not that much excess water," he said.

"We can show where every bit of our water will be needed over the next 20-25 years."
