A Moreland man was apparently so intoxicated he didn't see or hear the train bearing down on him late Tuesday in Moreland.
Michael John Putney, 32, of Med Lane, was lucky.
Fortunately, he missed the full brunt of the engine. Instead he was struck by the stairs that lead up to the main engine compartment, according to Coweta County authorities.
Putney was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with a broken nose, several lacerations and an injured leg, according to Maj. Jimmy Yarbrough with the Coweta County Sheriff's Office, adding the injuries were not life-threatening.
The train engineer saw Putney, who was relieving himself on the tracks, and began to blow the engine's horn, the major said.
"[Putney] said he was so drunk he never heard the horn or saw the train," Yarbrough added.
Engine 4 with the Coweta County Fire Department responded and found Putney in the location of Moreland's Med Lane and Railroad Street, according to fire department Assistant Chief Scott Harmon.
Crews from Engine 4 and Coweta Emergency Medical Service Medic 604 began working on Putney, and were soon joined by Coweta Fire Advance Life Support Engine 9. He was taken to Atlanta Medical Center for further treatment.
