An early Monday car accident resulted in an infant being flown to an Atlanta area hospital.
The accident occurred just before 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Wagers Mill Road and Georgia Highway 16 (Carrollton Hwy.), according to Lieutenant Keith Addis with the Coweta County Sheriff's Office.
James Smith, 29, of Newnan was northbound on Wagers Mill in a 1996 Honda Accord when he told authorities he had a mechanical malfunction and went through the stop sign, the lieutenant said. As Smith went into the intersection, he was hit by an eastbound Honda CRV driven by Cindy Craig, 30, of Whitesburg.
The impact resulted in Craig's car overturning, Addis said. An infant in the vehicle, who was in a child seat, was taken out and flown to Children's Hospital of Atlanta at Egleston. Craig was taken to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton by ground ambulance.
"Units arrived on scene to find a two-vehicle accident with both vehicles in the ditch and one of them upside down," said Assistant Fire Chief Mitch Coggin with the Coweta County Fire Department. "Bystanders had assisted the occupants out of all vehicles prior to the fire department arriving on scene. The vehicle that was upside down was occupied by a mother and an infant."
Smith was charged with failing to stop at a stop sign, Addis said.
