Hospital bringing new physicians, medical practices

By Alex McRae

The Newnan Times-Herald

A new hospital generates a buzz in its hometown, but it also generates heightened interest within the area's medical community.

When a patient needs to be hospitalized, physicians seek to recommend a hospital that offers the best care available while remaining convenient to both practitioner and patient.

Both those goals can be met at the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital. New physicians and medical practices are already committed to working at the new hospital or opening offices nearby.

Many of those new physicians and practices provide services to mothers, infants and newborns.

According to PNH officials, Piedmont Newnan currently has seven OBGYN physicians and one certified midwife on staff. This specialty will grow because the additional capacity available at the new facility will accommodate a greater number of deliveries. Improved service and facilities at the new hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU, will also allow more treatment options for newborns.

Hospital officials say two additional OBGYN practices are already making plans to provide service at the new hospital.

Peachtree City Obstetrics and Gynecology will be opening a practice at the new Piedmont Medical Plaza in the April/May timeframe. This practice, which has operated in the south metro Atlanta area since 1985, includes four female physicians with a combined experience of 60 years in the OBGYN specialty, and one nurse practitioner.

The group will offer full obstetric and gynecological services, with uro-gynecology procedures and high-risk obstetrics as areas of special interest.

"Peachtree City OBGYN is excited to join the Coweta County medical community and be part of the Piedmont Newnan Hospital medical staff," said Mironda Williams, M.D., Peachtree City OBGYN. "Our practice looks forward to expanding our presence in south metro Atlanta and being able to deliver babies and perform gynecological procedures at the new Piedmont Newnan Hospital."

Atlanta Perinatal Associates is opening an office with Georgia Pediatric Cardiology in Newnan in February. Physicians include Dr. David Jones, with Georgia Pediatric Cardiology, his partner Dr. Serge Geffrard and perinatologist Dr. Dexter Page, of Atlanta Perinatal Associates, according to PNH officials.

Atlanta Perinatal Associates is new to the community. Georgia Pediatric Cardiology has been in the Newnan area for eight years, according to Dr. Jones. The offices of the new practice of APA and GPC are located at 1201 Lower Fayettevile Road in Newnan.

"We are excited about our relationship with APA and Piedmont Newnan Hospital," said Dr. Jones. "We look forward to supporting the community, the primary care physicians and the newborn nursery.

"We care for patients as early as 20 weeks gestation (pregnancy ) through adolescence and look forward to the opening of the new hospital and the ability to care for patients with increasing acuity."

Dr. Page, of Atlanta Perinatal Associates, said, "We are excited about opening our new office in Newnan. We will provide support to the obstetricians and increase the ability of Piedmont Newnan Hospital to provide care for complicated patients who have previously been transferred for delivery.

"APA offers the latest technology, including three- and four-dimensional imaging to assess potential congenital anomalies as early as the first trimester. We also offer genetic counseling and education to minimize morbidity.

"Through our collaboration with Georgia Pediatric Cardiology, we will be able to provide comprehensive care for the assessment and treatment of pregnancies when the baby has heart disease."

Drs. Neely Dean and Heidi Moeling of Piedmont Physicians Obstetrics and Gynecology at Newnan will be moving to the new Piedmont Medical Plaza on the new hospital campus.

Southern Crescent Women's Healthcare also has plans to be part of the new hospital facility.

Dr. Robert Whipple, IV, Medical Director of Piedmont Newnan Hospital's Nursery and NICU, will relocate his offices to the Piedmont Medical Plaza in July.

I am happy to hear of all the pediatric services moving to Newnan. I would love to see a pediatric Neurology office open in Newnan too!
