Fairburn man wounded in gun battle with home invaders

Police say a homeowner was wounded in a gun battle that started after armed intruders entered his house southwest of Atlanta.

Fairburn police say three armed men broke into the home on Greenwood Trace around 4:15 a.m. Thursday. The homeowner's uncle, Frank Johnson, says they were awake watching TV when they heard the back door crash in and bullets began flying.

Johnson tells WSB-TV (http://bit.ly/15KkZg9) that he ran to a closet and called 911.

Police said the 40-year-old homeowner grabbed his own gun and a shootout ensued. He was shot several times and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

It wasn't known whether any of the suspects were shot. Police said they demanded cash, stole the homeowner's cellphone and fled the scene.

Fairburn is about 20 miles southwest of Atlanta.
