This weekend is not the time to go hiking at the Chattahoochee Bend State Park property in western Coweta.
Deer hunters will be on the property, located along Flat Rock Road, from Saturday through Tuesday.
The nearly 3,000-acre property is not open for general hunting, as it was last year.
Instead, hunting is limited to adult/child teams that have already been chosen.
The 75 adult/child teams were drawn in September. Only participants who have been selected should be on site, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
Hunting begins 30 minutes before sunrise Saturday and ends 30 minutes after sunset on Tuesday.
Hikers and explorers are urged to postpone visiting the park until the hunt is concluded.
The park property was opened for hunting as a wildlife management area last fall and winter but is now being operated more like a state park. Annual quota hunts will likely be scheduled to keep the deer population under control.

I'm pretty sure people walk around in those woods all the time. It may be illegal but that doesn't stop some people. I guess it was nice to give people aheads up.

This article misleads the public into thinking the park is open already for hiking, etc. It won't be open for use until Spring 2011.

Walking and exploring is one thing, but walking and exploring while hunters are on the prowl is dangerous. Thanks for letting us know. People have been walking around in those woods for centuries, and unless any state park wastes millions on fencing in the property, people are going to be exploring. I even heard rumor the Belt Road Booger moved out there because it's so nice. I guess now we can call him the Chatt Bend Booger. :-)
