Haralson holiday activities on July 5

Haralson will celebrate Independence Day with a parade, concert and fireworks celebration July 5 -- a chance for a second fireworks show in Coweta in addition to Newnan Rotary Club's Drake Stadium event.

Eric Spencer organized last year's Independence Day festivities in the south Coweta town. He is working with Bo Rosemas to plan the second annual Haralson event.

A parade will be held at 7:30 p.m. Anyone interested in taking part in the parade should contact Spencer at 770-365-9388 or Rosemas at 770-599-3244 or 678-458-8859.

Last year, the parade was held earlier in the day, but Spencer said this year's events are planned to flow so that people who take part in the parade can easily stay for the music and fireworks.

"We've got a live band playing from 8 to 9 or 9:15," Spencer said. Bottom Line from Newnan will be the band.

After the concert, a fireworks display will light up the night sky. "It ought to be a good time," said Spencer, who has also organized a community Christmas gathering in Haralson for several years.

A parade and fireworks will be held in Newnan the evening of July 4. Another Coweta town planning a big Independence Day is Moreland.

July 4 is always a big day in Moreland -- largely because of a community barbecue that dates back some six decades. Three area churches -- First Baptist Church of Moreland, Moreland United Methodist Church and White Oak Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church -- join forces each year to prepare and serve the plates of barbecue and Brunswick stew.

Plates will be $8 again. Serving begins at 11 a.m. at the Lewis Grizzard pavilion behind Moreland Mill, but people should to plan to be in line by 10:30 or 10:45.

The Puckett Station Arts and Crafts Festival will also be held in Moreland on July 4. The festival focuses on handcrafted, one-of-a-kind items.

Gretchen Deichelbor has coordinated the arts and crafts festival in Moreland for several years. This year, she is taking steps to turn oversight of the project over to her son, James. Many exhibitors return from year-to-year, but there is space for new artists and craft makers this year.

Exhibitors spread their wares on the lawn at Moreland United Methodist Church, along downtown streets and in the historic Moreland Mill which also houses the city offices and a museum. The price for booth space will remain at $45 this year.
