The Grantville City Council begrudgingly raised its sewer rates Monday night to fulfill financing requirements on a loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
"Nobody wants to make this motion," said Councilman Nick Sasso.
But Grantville Mayor Casey Houston said the city really "doesn't have any choice," since the grant will fund a number of necessary improvements for the sewer system and the city, including upgraded sewage ponds and improved handicapped access to certain areas.
The new residential base rate for sewer will be $20 per month, from 0-2,000 gallons, with an additional $6 charge for every 1,000 gallons over that base amount. The new commercial base rate will be $30 for the first 2,000 gallons of use, plus an additional $9.75 charge per 1,000 gallons over the base.
The increased rates will ensure that the low-interest, $815,000, 15-year loan can be repaid by the city, officials said.
Houston said if the city doesn't need all the funding then "the balance can go back to the USDA."
"We can revisit this again," she said.
The previous residential base rate was $14; the additional fee over that amount was previously $3.50.
