“This came as a total surprise to me at 3 p.m. this afternoon,” City Manager Johnny Williams said. “I’ve been totally blindsided.”

The Grantville City Council voted Monday night to fire City Manager Johnny Williams at the close of Tuesday night’s meeting.

The council met briefly in closed session before returning to the council chambers and voted unanimously to fire Williams. Councilman David Riley made the motion to fire Williams, citing a unilateral separation clause in his contract.

The unilateral clause means Williams is an “at will” employee and the council does not have to provide a reason for dismissal.

“This came as a total surprise to me at 3 p.m. this afternoon,” Williams said. “I’ve been totally blindsided.”

“We have a new council and new thoughts,” Mayor Jim Sells said after the meeting. “We’re looking for someone who’s more engaged in our vision for Grantville’s future.”

Sells said Williams “had done a good job” and “helped us solve some problems” during his two-year tenure.
