Gov. Deal's approval rating about 50 percent

By Walter C. Jones Morris News Service ATLANTA – Gov. Nathan Deal's approval rating is in the range of 50 percent, according to a survey released Wednesday. The poll by InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion Research conducted Oct. 18 shows 48 percent of those asked approve of the job he's doing. Another 27 percent disapprove while one-quarter had no opinion.
The poll of 459 registered voters has a margin of error of 5 percent. Deal's strongest support comes from older Georgians and his fellow Republicans. Not surprisingly, Democrats tend to give him a lower grade, although one-third of Democrats had no opinion or knew nothing about him. The high number of people with no opinion of Deal isn't unusual in a governor's first year, according to InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery. "That's not surprising because they don't see him on TV every day like they do during a campaign," he said. Having a job-approval rating below 50 percent – or in that range when allowing for the 5-percent margin of error – isn't necessarily bad news for Deal. Other popular governors are in the same range, especially with a weak national economy and Georgia continuing to suffer from high foreclosure and unemployment rates, Towery said. In results released Tuesday by the pollster, most Georgians said they thought the state was only doing as well as, or worse than, other southern states in terms of economic development, education and quality of life.
