Gas prices continue to climb and on Monday, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded was $3.662, up nearly two cents from the day before.
The Georgia state average was $3.534 on Monday, according to AAA's fuelgaugereport.com site. That's up from $3.501 on Thursday.
This week's rationale for ever-increasing gas prices is likely one that will be met with disgust by many who have to pay those prices -- it's because the economy is looking up.
"The price of crude oil advanced again last week after the U.S. Labor Department reported payroll gains were greater than projected," according to Jessica Brady of AAA Auto Club South, which tracks gas prices.
"Payrolls increased 216,000 in March when they were predicted to increase 190,000," Brady said. "The increase boosted investor confidence that demand is on the rise going into the summer driving season. The unemployment rate also dropped in March from 8.9 percent to 8.8 percent."
In Newnan on Monday, regular unleaded was advertised for $3.55 a gallon on the west side.
Along Bullsboro Drive, prices ranged from a low of $3.41 to a high of $3.55. Most stations were charging more than $3.50 a gallon.
In addition to the economy, there is, of course, the continuing unrest in Libya, as well as growing problems in other Middle Eastern countries.
"The unrest continues in Libya after Moammmar Gadhafi's troops advanced against the rebels, causing them to further retreat," Brady said. "Other Middle East countries face turmoil as well such as Yemen, Bahrain and Iran, creating uncertainty in the oil market."
Crude oil settled Friday at $107.94 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, up $2.54 from last week. That was the highest settlement price since September 2008.
And it doesn't look as if things are going to improve, at least not according to AAA.
"Oil prices continue to move higher as we get closer to the summer driving season," said Brady. "The unrest in the Mideast will sustain the already high oil prices, but coupled with positive economic news in the U.S., prices are likely to move even higher," she said.

A little sensitive now are we? Dumbacrats called Bush all sorts of names and said they were "fixit". Well, get to fixing. Excuses like one time gas went up because of a blizzard in the midwest , now it's Libya. Gas in Bremen $3.65 , same regular gas $3.52 in LaGrange. Why is this?

Name calling serves no purpose. We all have different views on all aspects of life. These gas prices affect us all, from the ghetto to the suburbs.

I've done my research Matt, my car is the most efficient it can get for an older model. I can't afford a new car, nor even a "nused" car. I have started taking my bike the 1.7 miles to the post office to check my mail. My work is on the other side of town though. So nothing more I can do.

As long as we keep buying it the price is out of our hands. There wont be any fewer cars on the road at 5 dollars a gallon than at 3 dollars a gallon. We have to power as consumers to control the price but we wont do it....

only thing that causes us to pay unnecessary gas prices: Speculation

There is always an excuse for gas prices to climb and the oil companies to make their billions. Here is one to think about: When we have jobs but can't afford to get there again, like we did in 2008, then the economy like it did then will end up crashing. Just because we have jobs doesn't mean we are cabable of supporting our families with basic needs let alone think of how we can do the extras!!! The economy is balanced on the gas prices whether we like it or not. EVEN food has increased, the cost of shipping, the cost of a plane ticket, the cost of our power bill. Lower gas prices helps us to afford to live, and enjoy our families, not kill ourselves working to just put food on the table.

I goggled "China Ghost Cities" to see what that was about. Whose bright idea was that? Seems our government is not the only incompetent one around. But, how does this affect gas prices? I do think supply & demand does rule gas prices.

Hits a Grand Slam!

There's nothing we can do since supply and demand fundamentals no longer rule commodity prices.
We will have to wait for the China bubble to pop and the hedge funds to move on to other investment vehicles.
Google "China ghost cities" and you will see what's coming.

We can buy oil from Brazil in the near future thanks to Obama loaning them money to drill but not allowing drilling in our own gulf. Gas prices high? I guess you Dumbacrats can blame it on Bush still. It worries me some that our president is so incompetent but what worries me even more is realizing how many Americans were stupid enough to elect him our president.

Start doing some reasearch on your own. If you are determined enough there are ways to help make your veichle more fuel efficient, not to mention your driving habits. Look into alternative fuels, biodiesel is one of the biggest and most cost effective ones, its also fairly easy to do yourself.

Costs up, no raises this year, many still jobless, food prices also up etc. Yet the Government does nothing to keep the gas prices from soaring so we can climb out of the recession. Wish I had the government's wages and they had mine. I know I've definitely cut back on driving, AND if the gas prices continue to go higher, I'll be out of a job because I can't afford these high gas prices. Amazing. We should have already had non gas powered cars. Where are the one's that popped up from the oil rigg disaster a few years ago? Well, nevermind I can't afford to get a new one anyway, but I've not heard about them since that happened. Scary, we are back to square one.

Drive only when necessary. The supply will add up & the costs will come back down.

Whoa mule, get up mule. You may be "hearing this" more often a few years from now unless we get off our buns and develop alternative fuels and energy. Projects to develop alternative fuels and energy should have been initiated way back when Jimmy Carter was president. Remember the gas shortage of Alfred Newman's reign?
