Three local convenience stores were raided Thursday afternoon during an illegal video gambling sting conducted by the Newnan Police Department's City Drug Unit.
According to Detective-Sergeant Danny McDonald, illegal cash payouts were made to an undercover officer at each of the gas stations earlier in the week. McDonald -- head of the Drug Unit -- said citizen complaints initially prompted police to investigate the businesses for awarding winners money instead of store credit or prizes. "In Georgia, that constitutes commercial gambling," he said.
During a bust shortly after 2 p.m. at the BP station on Market Square Road in SummerGrove, officers seized five machines and arrested store clerk Ishtiaq Ahmad, 28, for commercial gambling. The store owner -- unidentified as of Thursday evening -- would also be taken into custody, according to authorities.
Lakeside Shell at 1215 Highway 34 E. and Newnan Crossing Shell at 1175 Highway 34 E. were also targeted by police Thursday, and more arrests are pending. Names of those suspects were not available Thursday evening.
Newnan Police Chief Douglas L. "Buster" Meadows said these latest raids -- the third set since May -- are part of an ongoing effort by authorities to crack down on criminal activity. "We plan to be tough on crime," he said. "The path of least resistance is obeying the law the way it's written."

I know how to get there, I ain't no idiot! I've lived here in Georgia for 35 years; All I'm saying is that everyone would relax with a cold one in their hand, like people in Florida do, then maybe we wouldn't have such 'stuck-ups' living here! Read the Opinion secton, everybody complains about something!

GO COWETA COUNTY! I AM GLAD THE SHERIFF'S DEPT IS WANTING TO CRACK DOWN CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THE INJUSTICE WITHIN THE SHERIFF'S DEPT AND OUR CROOKED JUDICIAL SYSTEM? HOW DO WE CITIZENS CRACK DOWN ON THAT, ANY SUGGESTIONS. THIS IS A GOOD OLE BOY SYSTEM HERE, THEY SAY!!!

The police bugget really doesn't depend on fees/funds like some people think. You can go on Newnan.gov and look up all sorts of cool budget reports that is required to be released to the public. True the budget is being readied for next year. But that goes for about every business I can think of.

Jeff G. - I-75 will take you there. Most moving companies probably go there also. If Florida is so grand, go live with the cubanos for a while.

Gambling AND drug crackdowns? Must be budget season at police headquarters.

When did anyone say they hated or put the blame on the officers? Everyone understands they did their job as they were told to do. I along with I hope everyone else complaining about this understands that, and thanks all of officers for their work. The people though that thought this was more important than the hundred other things they could have been doing, yeah, I blame them.

I don't understand the uproar. If you don't like the law then contact the people who can change it. If you understood the increased amount of illegal activity, other than gambling, that these kinds of establishments draw then you would be glad they are busting them. Or heck, maybe you wouldn't be, but me personally I'm glad they are out there doing there jobs.

First of all just let me say that this is the reason why Georgia has these crazy laws, because no one can obey the little laws. If something is illegal, that means don't do it. We have all these crazy, bad raised people here that think they can get by with anything. I agree that Georgia is mad because they are not making any money off of this, but it is still illegal.

Illegal is illegal. So when you ask "isn't there BETTER things to do than to arrest people for illegal gambling?" Well...they're police officers and making arrests when something being done is illegal is their job.

Why don't these so called narcotics officers crack down on the widespread drug problem instead of worrying about these machines. Oh maybe because the state of Ga is not making any money off the machines. That's what this is all about. $$$$$$

The drug unit was never set up to be a drug unit. It was supposed to target small time drug dealers and other petty crimes. And this isn't the first time a video bust has happened and it won't be the last. Please don't hate on the officers that were only doing what they were told to do. Don't like it then complain to Chief Buster Meadows who created the unit. Oh and remember that its against the law for people to pay out cash on this stupid machines. So complain to your local state lawmakers too. It makes me sad to see our local leos get so little support from the community.

First off please don't get mad at the officers. They have to follow the WRITTEN law and arrest people who violate it. If store owners/workers openly violate the law, they need to be arrested. Don't like the laws then you need to take it up with the lawmakers not law enforcers. And I don't think city officers recieve overtime anymore. So hopefully it didnt take too many officers away from the road. I'm glad stores like this are being busted. Now maybe law abiding store owners can get some customers.I won't even go into stores that have those stupid machines because too many odd folks hang around from what I hear.

Also, why is the drug unit doing this? Did Coweta finally win the drug war so they needed something else to do?

The main problem with these machines is that store owners can fix the percentage of payouts by changing it at their leisure. They may make them pay out more for a while to get people playing a lot and then switch them to completely rip people off. It's not as though these machines have Vegas style regulations. If people must throw their money away, who wouldn't rather have it support education even if the machines were regulated and fair. Both ways are just taxes on the poor but at least one supports something beneficial.

If we could inherit some of Florida's laws, Georgia wouldn't be so messed up! We could buy alcohol any day of the week, play slot machines without "undercovers" taking away our sense of relaxation, purchase fireworks; you get the picture! We have some of the dumbest laws in this state; why should we expect any different from the people who stand firm on these beliefs?

Wow. I live in Summergrove and saw all the cop cars yesterday at the store in Market Square. I thought that the store got robbed! There were like 8 cop cars ~ 2 blocking the entrances. I never would have thought that they were taking out the machines. I am NOT a fan of gambling ~ we don't even buy scratch offs ~ but I am not opposed to it for whoever wants to spend their money on. It seems like such a waste of our police officers time ~ isn't there BETTER things to do than to arrest people for illegal gambling? Especially when they can buy lotto tix right in the same store? Isn't hat hypocritical?

What about this same store and so many like it sell GEORGIA lottery tickets, Alcohol and cigarettes with GEORGIA tax stamps.Talk about swallowing camels and gagging at gnats! Legalize those stupid machines and let people spend their money on what ever game of chance they want to play. put it on a ballot and let people decide what should constitute an illegal form of entertainment. It is a game of chance like so many others and no one is forced to play. I am all for crime reduction but I have a hard time seeing this as a crime when these machines are used in other states to legally throw your money away. a fool and his money...its still his money.
