Georgia organization challenges county, city gun laws

CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) -- A gun rights organization has challenged ordinances in the west Georgia city of Carrolton and in Carroll County which it says unfairly restrict the right to carry weapons. Handwritten letters, dated Friday, were delivered to officials with the county and city governments. The letters challenged two city ordinances that say firearms can't be carried on the Greenbelt Trail and that prohibit firearms from being carried by parade participants. The organization GeorgiaCarry.org also said in the letters it was challenging a Carroll County law that allows the commission chairman to suspend the dispensing and transportation of firearms and other items at times of emergency. The Times-Georgian newspaper of Carrollton reports that the letters claim the ordinances conflict with state law. City and county officials said they were reviewing the letters. ---
