Carrollton company pays $226k in back wages

CARROLLTON, Ga. (AP) – Federal labor officials say they've recovered more than $226,000 in back wages for people who worked on federally-funded school construction projects in west Georgia. Department of Labor spokesman Michael D'Aquino Monday said they found Southeastern Painting Contractors, Inc. violated minimum wage, overtime and record-keeping provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, among other offenses. Officials say the Carrollton-based company misclassified 67 workers as independent contractors and didn't' pay them overtime compensation, but paid them their regular wages instead. D'Aquino says employees were also paid lower hourly wages than what they should have received by contract.
