Tax help made easy: Free help part of library program

By John Winters

The Newnan Times-Herald

About 15 volunteers were on hand Wednesday to kick off a free tax preparation and filing program in Coweta County.

There was a slight glitch as the computer server went down during the first Wednesday session at the A. Mitchell Powell Jr. Library in Newnan, but nevertheless about 50 people were expected to get help. Sessions are also held on Thursdays, including today, at Central Library in east Coweta.

The free tax prep and filing is being offered throughout tax filing season by the Coweta County Public Libraries and volunteers with the AARP Foundation.

"We come from all kinds of backgrounds," said volunteer Richard Nielsen. "We're just interested in helping others."

Volunteers had to take a week-long training program and then pass a test to qualify to help prepare returns.

"Last year we did about 800 total and we're trying to do about 50 today," Nielsen added.

One of the first in line was Travis Stanford.

"It's an excellent service," Stanford said. "I came here last year... it really saves some money."

Volunteers will be at the Powell Library, 25 Hospital Road, Newnan, every Wednesday through April 11. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The program also is offered at Central Library, 85 Literary Lane in eastern Coweta, on Thursdays, beginning today and through April 12. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

There also will be a one-day opportunity at the Heard County Public Library, 564 Main St. in Franklin, on March 13, a Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Taxpayers should bring a copy of last year's (2010) tax return, all copies of W-2 forms, 1099 forms, Social Security Benefits Statement, all interest or dividends received statements, unemployment compensation statements, all forms indicating a tax paid in 2011, dependent child care provider information, all receipts or canceled checks for itemizing deductions and Social Security cards or other official documentation for the taxpayer and all dependents.
