APS Cheating Scandal

Principal indicted in cheating scandal dies

ATLANTA (AP) — A former principal who was among 35 Atlanta educators indicted in the school system's cheating scandal has died.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/15vula0) that the death of Willie Davenport was confirmed by Howard Grant, executive director of the Atlanta Board of Education. She was 66.

The cause and date of her death have not been released.

Davenport was the principal of D.H. Stanton Elementary School.

A state investigation in 2011 found cheating on standardized tests by nearly 180 educators in 44 Atlanta schools. Investigators say educators gave answers to students or changed answers on tests after they were turned in.

In March, a grand jury indicted former Superintendent Beverly Hall and 34 other educators, accusing them of involvement in a conspiracy to cheat, conceal cheating or retaliate against whistleblowers.
