Firefighter saves same cat twice

By Elizabeth Melville

The Newnan Times-Herald

A firefighter who rescued a cat from a well in west Coweta on June 29 stepped up to rescue the cat a second time on Tuesday.

The cat, which was taken into the custody of Coweta County Animal Control following its rescue a month ago, was scheduled to be euthanized Wednesday morning. No one claimed the furry feline, which suffered from fleas, and it was not apparent whether it was wild or domesticated.

The Coweta County firefighter who descended 40 feet into a well at 866 Welcome to Arnco Road to rescue the cat on June 29 decided "for it to die tomorrow would be a waste of what we did."

Coweta firefighter Jim Cadenhead went to the shelter on Selt Road at lunch Tuesday to retrieve Wellie the cat.

He was notified of the cat's pending demise from a shelter rescue group who urged him to take action. But, long before strangers urged him to save Wellie, his two daughters, ages 10 and 11, had pleaded on the cat's behalf.

"They wanted me to get the cat when I rescued him," said Cadenhead. "They've been begging for the cat. When I told one of my daughters [Tuesday] about what was going to happen, she told me, 'Daddy, go get that cat.'

"A group of guys at the fire department had some time and effort in getting this cat out of that hole," he continued. "We did a big thing and had a positive outcome. This was quickly going from a positive to a negative. It made it worthwhile to go get the cat."

For now, the cat will reside with Cadenhead. However, its future residence remains uncertain because the firefighter already has two large hound dogs that "don't like cats."

"I might give the cat to my mom -- at least that way my daughters can still see the cat."

First off I never said the pool would be trashed within days, within months yes.
Frankly yes the baaad neighborhood doesn't deserve a nice new pool.
They don't take care of what they live in how do you expect them to take care of a community pool. Thats not being hateful its being truthful.

One thing EVERYONE can agree on:
Bubba, you are one 'sad' individual.
Everytime you make a post - whatever the topic - it's always slanted in a negative direction. For example:
- when the new City / County pool opened, you TRASHED its very existence, from day one...
You believed folks 'in that baaad neighborhood, didn't deserve a nice, new pool - that they would be TRASHING IT, within days...
So shame on you, Bubba!
You are so judgemental,
so negative - give it a rest!

Amidst all the name calling we still don't know if the well poses a problem to some unsuspecting person, possibly a child, who might fall into it thus resulting in another confined rescue attempt. This time the lessons learned from the cat rescue will be for a human.I call upon Miss/Mrs Richardson to get the "rest of the story".

Regardless what name we all want to use is a personal choice, but isn't it great we live in a country where we can have our say. The last I will say on this regardless what other comments made in response, as I think we have beat it to death and time to move on - I like firefighters, and cats (as well as dogs and I dodge squirrels in the road), and I have a constitutional right to question management decisions by those who command in our public sector. Train like you fight but not too realistic. In fact why doesn't the fire department just stay in the station in full kit and receive power point training... In fact they could rig up a projector so the screen could be on one of the big garage doors and then they could stay in their trucks. While we're at it lets have the trucks Idling that way they would have to have their oxygen masks already operating. Or I guess we could go ahead and let the Fire chief and his management team make policies and decisions because their leadership has already fielded an outstanding department. So there you go thats the other side of the argument. The fire chief says its OK and he has more or better experience than you Eugene and I am darned glad that he and his boys are around to save Kitty Cats twice if need be.

Worried about the cost of rescuing this kitty?

7/29/2010

Link To This Comment

For those concerned about the resources and money it cost to rescue this cat from the well, think about the second rescue and do some research into how much it costs the county to operate Coweta Co Animal Control.
It costs more to euthanize animals several times a week than it would if more people were responsible pet owners. And for those people who aren't responsible, other municipalities and counties have saved a lot of money by passing common-sense animal welfare laws designed to keep lost, stray and unwanted cats and dogs out of pounds like CCAC to begin with.
Yet I don't see any complaints about this issue.

Soldiers' hero dogs arrive in U.S.
Below is the quote from the soldier who was saved by the stray dogs that became part of their Company Bravo 2/121...

that the dogs "saved my life," Duke told the Post.
I wonder if those 5 dogs weighed the risk of loosing their lives to save the ones of the Soldiers that had taken them in???

Eugene your not the only one with confined space entry. A 40 foot well does not make it dangerous alone. I am sure they made sure the air in the hole was safe for the firefighter to enter before entering. And there was no danger of walls caving in, or live electric wires.Firefighters follow rules in any rescue, even cat rescue.

7/29/2010

Link To This Comment

You can't predict the next call or the future. My wife knows the risks when she took that line of work, and as her husband I accept and support the risks she takes. If in her daily work she needs to rescue a cat then it will be done. It is her job, and that of her coworkers and support within the fire department to ensure things are done in a safe manner. I know the confined space training she goes through, and yes it is a controlled training = the kind of training where you get to see 15-20 fire fighters go through it, before you have to go through it. In this Cat rescue / training it is closer to the real application of the training. After considering the story I still say rescuing the cat is worth the risk, and expence.

So, when folks do not want to answer tough questions, they demonize someone else, or change the subject altogether. What I am is a person with over thirty years of safety and engineering training, including closed/confined space entry safety techniques and risk assessment. Someone else besides a lawyer can ask questions in this life, and your self serving statement my rationale does not cut it fails to answer the safety and risk assessment questions I present. So how about 6Pack, would you risk your family member for a cat in a well?

Not about firefighter, it is about management

7/29/2010

Link To This Comment

Let me ask the tougher question than what my prior comments pose: would those in favor of this cat rescue be willing to have your son, daughter, husband, wife, mother, father, brother, sister be the one to put their life at risk by going into one of the most dangerous environments in a work place - closed space entry? Would any of you be willing to be the 911 caller seeking emergency help for yourself or your family and would you be willing to be the victims of delay because the firefighter was 40 feet in a well and his partner / truck tied up on a call to rescue a cat, even if it was only two extra minutes, and in the end that two minutes meant the difference in your house burning down or your loved one living or dying? In this case, the management decision was to put human safety and life at risk to rescue a cat 40 feet deep in a well. At the end of the day, the risk management assessment should seek to protect and preserve human life rather than risk that as was done in this cat rescue.

I have marched down Pennsylvania Ave in defense of those four legged creatures that cannot speak for themselves. Whether they are wasting away in some research lab somewhere or at the bottom of a 40 foot well makes no difference to them. The two young girls are probably very proud of what their father did. 7/29/2010

Training is usually done under controlled circumstances. No suggestion to let the animal starve, but then again, no need to risk human life in this manner either. Be real and ask yourself a pragmatic what if question: What would you say the day after if this firefighter got seriously hurt or died? Would you then say the cat rescue was a good management decision. The Firefighter is a great person, but sound management decisions do not include letting a great person risk so much in this instance to rescue a cat. By the way folks, because I do not agree with this management decision does not make me heartless, but only willing to take the sweet, warm and fuzzy out of he decision making process where the decision is to risk human safety for animal safety. And the cost is more than a few tax dollars - ask for the public records on what an hour of fire crew time costs.

Where---and this ISN'T the reporter's fault---Eugene, where is your compassion?? The Fire Dept doesn't send units out on a whim without making sure that there is some kind of back up plan in place in case units are needed elsewhere. Eugene, please re-read the article. The fireman, on his own time and at his own expense, rescued the cat from the animal shelter so that the animal wouldn't be euthanized or eugenized. No public funds where used; unless you consider his spending his paycheck the way he wants to do so without being chastized by ill-informed people. It's not likely any animal rescue policies will be changed or even considered amidst the overwhelming support of the populace for such rescues. Most of us- especially us animal lovers- appreciate and support the department's use of it's equipment for animal rescues. It may be dangerous, but it is excellent training- especially when they aren't planned... and most training scenarios are dangerous. Not only that, but training exercises, even in controlled conditions, tie up the same kinds of resources. Do you propose doing away with training exercises because of the chance that they might tie up a fire truck normally stationed near your home? If I ever fall in a well or have a similar mishap, I'd much prefer that someone who has short-notice animal rescue experience come to my aid instead of someone who has been sitting around watching TV and waiting for the next house fire.

I am ok with paying for the Cat rescue with my taxes. You may be out of position as a fire fighter, but that may put you closer to an actual call...or possibly further away = no one can tell. I know Firefighters train quite often, so consider this live training = better to work the kinks out rescuing a cat, than an infant. Besides can you imagine the headlines if the Fire Dept refused a call like that? Bad press most likely.

Phooey on newnaneugene. Firefighters are trained to do things like well rescues. Would you want your youngsters trying to do that?

cat not rescued twice

I think the headline was a little misleading. To newnaneugene, the fire department did not rescue the same cat twice. The headline was referring to the actions of one fine firefighter and his family.

Hooray for the Fireman and Hooray for Wellie. How lucky that a good hearted Fireman came to Wellie's rescue twice.

who pays for this rescue?

While it makes a "sweet" and nice photo, we are spending tremendous resources on our Fire Dept., including a 20,000,000 bond issue we have to pay back. We face enough liability to our personnel being hurt and equipment being damaged to have such resources committed, especially the same cat. And, what happens if we are out of position on an animal rescue and a human needs help - how many would think the extra minutes it would take to move the personnel and equipment from an animal rescue is worth it if that amount of time was the difference in a person who dies having a chance to live? Would it be so sweet then? Closed area entry is one of the most dangerous acts any worker can do. Going 40 feet down a well is not safe and I have to question putting one of our fine public servants at such risk and tying up so many resources is a sound and practical management decision from a FD standpoint, but as well as the County Commission.
