An unoccupied home in southeastern Coweta County sustained significant fire damage as the result of a lightning strike Wednesday that occurred as a storm system rolled through the county.
The fire was reported just after 12:30 p.m. at 688 Cannon Road, which is located south of the Raymond community and north of Gordon Road, according to Assistant Fire Chief Todd Moore of the Coweta County Fire Department.
Units from Stations 1, 3, 4 and 12 responded to the scene to find visible flames coming from the 3,500-square-foot wood frame structure. The fire was brought under control shortly after 1:30 p.m. There were no injuries reported, according to Moore.
The home was unoccupied and had a for sale sign in the front yard, according to Moore.
The fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate. He examined the physical evidence and spoke with the neighbors who reported the fire and determined that it was caused by a lightning strike, according to the assistant fire chief.
The home sustained significant damage to one exterior wall and the attic space.
The heavy rains on Wednesday also flooded roadways in southeast Coweta.
Hines Road was shut down by the Coweta County Road Department when creek waters washed over a bridge. Hines Road connects Cecil Hunter Road and Highway 54. It is closed until further notice.
At least 2 inches of rain fell Wednesday in Newnan. As of 5 p.m., The Times-Herald weather station had recorded 1.93 inches.
