Newnan father now facing murder charge

By John Winters

The Newnan Times-Herald

A Newnan man is now charged in Clayton County with murder in the death of his 13-month-old child.

Ryan Edwards, 34, of Southwind Lane, Newnan, originally was charged with two counts of cruelty to children and one count of aggravated assault. Those charges were upgraded to include murder, according to Clayton County Jail records.

The child's mother, Toni Brown, told WSB-TV that Mikkah Brown suffered a severe brain injury and a fractured skull, according to Associated Press reports.

Brown says she found Mikkah unresponsive on Jan. 27 after returning home from work. She had left Mikkah with Edwards, the child's father.

She said she took Mikkah to an urgent care facility near their Morrow home, and he was later transferred to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, according to published reports.

"He had suffered a severe brain injury, fractured skull and severe brain damage," Brown was quoted as saying.

Authorities said Brown made the decision to have life support removed on Monday.
