East Coweta earns Governor's Cup for SAT test scores

By Jeff Bishop

The Times-Herald

East Coweta High School Principal Rick Waggoner was given the "Governor's Cup" at the Tuesday night meeting of the Coweta County Board of Education in recognition of his school's high achievement on SAT test scores.

East Coweta shares the recognition in Class AAAAA with Northside High School, Redan High School, Savannah Arts Academy, Cherokee High School, Alpharetta High School, Wheeler High School, South Forsyth High School, and Central Gwinnett High School.

Governor Sonny Perdue initiated the statewide competition in 2003 as part of an overall effort to raise Georgia's SAT scores. The Governor's Cup is awarded annually to the school in each class with the highest average SAT score improvement over the past three years.

"There's also a $1,000 cash award that goes with this," said Coweta County School Superintendent Blake Bass at the meeting, held at the Jackson Street office.

"We've already cashed the check," said Waggoner.

Dean Jackson, public information officer for the school system, said that ECHS students have distinguished themselves by upping their net SAT combined verbal and math scores by 15 points over the past three years.

"That's a net increase of 4 points on the verbal section of the test, and 11 points in math," he said.

He noted that both national and state SAT student scores have dropped over the same period.

"Our students have stepped up to the challenge and worked hard to raise SAT scores," said Gov. Perdue in a written statement. "These schools now have bragging rights for the next year. This is a tough competition to win, and I am proud of the tremendous improvement these schools have achieved in SAT scores."

In other business, the school board approved early payroll for teachers in the Coweta County School System.

"Christmas vacation falls at a time when the payroll is due earlier than normal," said Bass. "So the board will have to approve it."

The board also approved an $89,495 bid from D.C. Skinner Painting in South Carolina for a contract to paint East Coweta, Madras Middle School, and East Coweta Middle School.

"They came in the lowest on each school bid and also gave us an overall discount on the total," said Associate Superintendent Jerry Davis.

"We checked their references," said Davis. "There's no reason to assume they can't do the job. They work all over the Southeast."

It should've gone to Northgate High School. Class of 2009 was by far the best class for SAT scores. We are a school of excellence.

B - You are wrong. The school system is using our money responsibly by awarding the contract to the lowest bidder.

B-I am not at all outraged. This is my tax dollars the school system is spending. Be frugal with my $$, maybe the SC paint company is willing to work for a smaller margin. Blame the paint contractors.

If local companies were competitive, they probably would have gotten picked.

A South Carolina paint company!?!?!? Am I the only person outraged by this? The school system should at least have the common decency to keep the big ticket money it spends local.
