Driver faces sodomy, sex assault charges

By Elizabeth Richardson

The Times-Herald

A Newnan man was criminally charged Tuesday for allegedly sodomizing a mentally handicapped woman who was in his custody on July 17, 2009.

The Coweta County Sheriff's Office has charged 27-year-old David Lee Hamilton, of 309 Binion Court, with sodomy and sexual assault against a person in custody, according to Major James Yarbrough.

On July 17, authorities believe Hamilton was employed as a driver for a transportation company in charge of taking the 21-year-old female from her home in Coweta County to a Pathways Community Service Board facility in Woodbury, Ga., for therapy, according to Yarbrough. Pathways provides services to the mentally handicapped in a multi-county area.

Authorities say the victim made an outcry to her counselor, who notified the woman's mother and police.

"We believe that it was just a one-time thing," said Yarbrough. "[Hamilton] hadn't been driving the bus long -- it was his first time on that route."
