Local motorists were pleasantly surprised Tuesday to find a crew from the Georgia Department of Transportation improving the pavement markings in Newnan's "S" curve intersection that leads both into and away from downtown.
Perhaps no one was as surprised as Newnan Police Chief Douglas L. "Buster" Meadows. The chief met with DOT officials in December to discuss plans to alleviate confusion at the troublesome intersection.
Motorists frequently have trouble navigating the S curve, and there have been a few collisions. Speed has generally been a contributing factor.
At one point, a DOT crew restriped the turn lanes but put them down wrong. At December's meeting, DOT officials told Meadows they planned to redo the lane striping at some point. Meadows was also told he'd be notified a day in advance so the police department could plan accordingly.
"I was going to have officers down there to keep traffic off of them," said Meadows.
Instead, Meadows found out the work was being done on Tuesday like most everyone else -- he drove by and noticed.
It appears that DOT crews redid the turn lane striping and repainted the turn arrows and crosswalks at the intersections of Jefferson and Clark streets and at Jackson and Clark streets.
Is it purely a coincidence that crews did work there Tuesday, only a day after The Times-Herald published an article about how to navigate the confusing intersection.
"I don't know if they monitor the paper or not -- I was told back in December that they'd try to get to it, but they didn't know when," said Meadows.

DOT did a good job on the lane stripping. Now it's up to the drivers to use them. Perhaps DOT can now get to Spence Ave. & finish that project!

By state law I don't think Newnan is allowed to touch this intersection. The state DOT has control of state highways right??

It's not going to matter one bit. Even cars with Coweta county tags cut me off all the time. Everyone is all about getting there first. The road made like that gives them the feeling it really doesn't matter and watch I will get ahead of them.. Drives me insane and I drive it at least 8 times a week.
