Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation are performing major reconstruction of Interstate 85 at different locations in Coweta County between mile marker 34 (near Exit 35/ U.S. 29 at Grantville) and mile marker 41 (near Exit 41/ U.S. 27 Alt/ U.S. 29 at Moreland).
To ensure motorists and contractor safety, this work will warrant lane closures and traffic shifts along this section of I-85, which could cause delays, said DOT spokeswoman Kimberly Larson.
Georgia DOT reports the following construction activities are tentatively planned for the period of Sunday through friday:
n Entrance ramp to I-85 from U.S. 29 -- The entrance ramp to I-85 northbound from U.S. 29 will be closed 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday.
n Interstate 85 northbound -- Various lane closures will be in place between mile markers 34 and 41 during daytime hours Monday through Thursday.
n Interstate 85 southbound -- A single lane closure will be in place between mile markers 47 and 46 on Monday.
n State route 34 (Exit 47) at I-85 east and westbound -- One right and one left lane will be closed with one remaining open in both directions from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday.
Details will be provided by message boards throughout the corridor.
The Georgia DOT notes that the above construction schedules are proposed activities planned by the contractors and may change due to weather conditions or other factors.
As in any work zone, motorists are reminded to pay special attention to traffic control devices, signs and posted speed limits to ensure safe passage through the work zone.
Georgia DOT urges travelers to call 511 for updated information about this or any other construction project on interstates and state routes. Georgia 511 is a free phone service that provides real-time traffic and travel information statewide, such as traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures, and delays due to inclement weather. Callers also can transfer to operators to request assistance or report incidents 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
