Coweta County Tax Commissioner Tommy Ferrell says that the 2009 state, county and school tax bills have been mailed and are due Dec. 1.
What homeowners will first notice when they open their bills this year is that the Homestead Tax Relief Grant (HTRG) is not included on their tax bill, Ferrell notes.
"Due to the decline in the state's economy the grant was not funded for 2009 by the Governor and Georgia Legislature," he said. "The grant was previously shown on prior year tax bills on homestead properties as a credit against taxes that would have otherwise been due and paid by the homeowner."
Ferrell asks that taxpayers read the insert included with the bills which will help explain the loss of the grant plus other inserts included that may provide valuable information.
Even though the HTRG grant was not funded for 2009; the regular and local homestead exemptions remain in place and were not affected, he said. Non-homestead properties were also not affected by the loss of the grant.
The tax millage rate for 2009 is 28.74 mills for unincorporated areas; 26.50 mills for incorporated areas plus city taxes for Senoia, Grantville, Moreland, Haralson and Sharpsburg. Those city taxes are included on county tax bills. Also included for the first time for the fire district and other affected areas is a new fire bond tax set at a rate of .47 mills by the Coweta County Commissioners for 2009. The fire bond was approved by voters in November 2008.
The Tax Commissioner's Office accepts cash, check and credit card payments through Visa, Mastercard and American Express with a two and a half percent administration fee. Debit cards are also accepted with a $1.50 fee per transaction.
Tax billing records may be viewed on the Tax Commissioner's Web site at www.cowetataxcom.com. Payments may also be made over this Web site through PayPal.
Ownership and assessment records may be viewed on the Tax Assessor's Web site at www.cowetatax.com .
If a homeowner's taxes are paid through an escrow account with a mortgage company they should forward a copy of the bill (or the top stub of the bill) to the mortgage company to insure payment is made by Dec. 1.
If a taxpayer does not receive a tax bill on any property they own by Oct. 15, they should call the Tax Commissioner's Office and another one will be mailed or they can just go to the web site to obtain the information. The Tax Commissioner's Office cannot guarantee the receipt of a tax bill in the mail.
Taxpayers are encouraged to mail their payments whenever possible. An overnight payment drop box is located at the Perry Street entrance to the Tax Commissioner's Office located in the County Administration Building at the corner of East Broad and Perry Streets. Office hours are 8 a.m. 5 p.m., Monday - Friday; except for the third Wednesday in each month when the office opens at 8:30 a.m.

I don't mind paying my property tax, I don't like the fact I am paying taxes on a house valued$40,000.over what I paid for it . I guess the county can always count on home owners to bleed dry......

You can say what you want about the school tax.I think its really a shame. The GEORGIA LOTTERY was vote on and put in place to take care of the school system.Where is all that money going? Can't be to the school system because again the homeowners are paying.

W Hill, no I do not feel as I should support schools that my family may never use. How about everyone that has a kid in school pays for their kids education, well now there is a thought huh? Where is the self responsiblity, Jeez!

1. you must not have ever been to a third world country if you think not having paper towels or soap is bad 2. i bought my house five years ago and the tax assessment has yet to go up....just like your's hasn't 3. We all benefit from the schools in our community, we all have a responsibility to future generations just like former genrations helped pave the way for our education. 4. Whining doesn't make anything better...if you can't afford something why not cut off your internet service and you won't have to comment on here anymore.

Actually no I don't care about the education of the future generation. Not everyone in the world wants or cares about children. If someone wants them they should be prepared to care of them and that includes their education. Stop expecting others to take care of your responsibilities. As for medicare that's a waste as well. I don't plan my life around depending on government hand outs.

property is worth less but my value didn't decrease???

Whether or not you "use" the school system, they are teaching the future generation of Coweta County. Wouldn't you hope your future neighbors, and the people taking care of you when you get older are educated, contribute to society, and have solid careers? And not to mention, their taxes will be paying for your medicare, so watch out! What comes around, goes around.

Yeah, the bathrooms look like they were in a third world country. no soap no towels, but the principals office looks nice...

My husband has taken a 50% pay cut and I am unemployed. We are barely scraping by, How in the world are we supposed to pay this along with trying to keep our house and utilities from being cut off.

I agree with you 100% percent MC! And, I would like to know why do they need so much? What are they doing with the money?

You might want to retract your statement. My husband works for the county and drives an older truck.

Yep, I got mine yesterday and mine went up. This is ridiculous! I am so sick of everything going up and the working class like myself, bills just rising up and up!

There really needs to be a better way to pay for the school system. I don't agree paying the majority of my property tax to fund a school system I have never used and never will use. Meanwhile the police and fire depts barely get a thing.

I recieved my tax bill, house and properties values remained the same, everything else went up. Makes me feel good supporting the changes and the failing economy!! (not)

yep! got mine right on time with a nice increase too! I notice as I travel Coweta County that my primary car is a 1982 model and my work vehicle is a 1992 yet county trucks are brand new with carrying new equipment. Wish I were a county employee.
