Coweta Man Dead, Son Charged With Murder

by Wes Mayer

A man is dead after a Thursday morning incident, and Coweta County authorities have charged his son with murder.

Around 5:30 a.m., 911 operators received a call from a man reporting he was being assaulted by his own son, said Coweta County Sheriff Mike Yeager. Within five minutes, two deputy units arrived at the home on 300 Nectarine Drive in the Peachtree Landing subdivision and found the victim, Richard L Earhart, 58, lying in a pool of blood beside the road. Emergency medical personnel were called to the scene and transported the unresponsive victim to Piedmont Newnan Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Deputies entered the home and found Justin Lee Earhart, 31, covered in blood, Yeager said. The house was also covered in blood, and units found several possible weapons. Justin Earhart was taken into custody at the scene and charged with murder.

“The cause of death appears to be trauma from some type of bladed weapon,” Yeager said.

Yeager said due to the weather, authorities were unable to perform an autopsy Thursday, so he could not say what the exact fatal injury was. Investigators are still working the scene.
