If gas prices reach $5 per gallon by Memorial Day as many are predicting, will you seriously consider purchasing a more fuel-efficient automobile?

The clocks are going back in at the 1904 Coweta County Courthouse in downtown Newnan, as the renovation work proceeds on the historic structure.
The mechanical parts of the clocks, and the hands, have already been installed, and the glass is being put back in piece by piece. The four clock faces have been filled for months with plywood.
New glass will be installed in the center of each clock face.
Some of the old glass will be retained. Many of the glass pieces were heavily damaged; much of the damage was caused by bullets of various caliber over the years -- in part possibly from people shooting at pigeons.
Plans are to consolidate the original glass into one or two clock faces, and to use all new glass on the remaining ones.
Though the clocks will be functional, nearby Newnan residents and workers won't be hearing the familiar chiming of the hours for a while. The clocks won't start regular operation until the courthouse project is completed.
The $7.5 million renovation project, which includes installation of an elevator as well as working to return the upstairs courtroom as close as possible to its original appearance, is set for completion this summer.
Funding comes from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, which was approved by voters in March 2006.

The sales tax ends in 2012. And yes the voter's of Coweta did authorize the work and tax.

Let's hope after $7.5 mil the shooting @ the birds is over. It may be time to quit being MAY-be-berry. It ain't your old 404 area code anymore.

does anyone else remember in the late eighties or early nineties when we as voter's authorized a one time one cent sales tax increase to "restore" the courthouse and after the work was paid for the tax would be removed. Well guess what,it never was rolled back and the county continues to this day to collect the revenue!

True story. When we moved here the yard lite was out. Power guy comes to fix it, says"shoot it out and I'll fix it one more time. After that you have to pay". My intro to rural Georgia.

It took them 3 years to build at a cost of over $40 million. We have probably dropped about the same in tax dollars on this old building that needs to be torn down. SPLOST is tax dollars!!!!

Someone calling himself "yankee" is complaining about how long this project is taking.
Maybe if the idea was to tear down the courthouse entirely and start over from scratch, it would go faster. But that wasn't the idea.

Think about it..they didn't have to take it apart piece by piece first.

It took a year to build the Empire State Building, think about it.
