Biting wind may have kept the numbers down, but the Teen Advisory Board of Community Welcome House still managed to bring off a successful "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" event to benefit the organization's safe haven for women and children who are victims of domestic abuse.
"We didn't have a whole lot of people because of the weather," said Linda Kirkpatrick, Executive Director of Welcome House, who estimated that 15-20 walkers participated in the event. "But it was a lot of fun. Hopefully next year it will be a little warmer."
Participants started their chilly march at Wadsworth Auditorium, headed downtown to Newnan's Court Square, and returned to Wadsworth for the event's finish.
Organizers from the teen board, who included Lucy Howard, Margaret Howard, Megan Bush, Summer Dooley and Malik Evans, collected items from downtown merchants to fill goodie bags for participants in the event, who raised money through sponsorships. Several male walkers wore women's shoes and costumes, and the teens awarded prizes for prettiest and ugliest shoes, best group costume and best individual costumes.
"Our teen board worked really hard," said Kirkpatrick.
Part of the event's purpose was to draw attention to violence in teen relationships. One in three teens experiences some type of abuse in dating relationships, according to www.teendvmonth.org . City Council member George Alexander was on hand to present a proclamation declaring February Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month in Newnan.
The Community Welcome House's Teen Advisory Board will next hold a bake sale to benefit the safe haven. During the first week of March, teen board members will sell baked goods during the lunch hour at Central Educational Center.
Coweta's Dancing Stars is Community Welcome House's major fundraiser and is set for April 18 at the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts. In its fifth year, the event features community "stars" of business and industry and influential citizens.
"It's wonderful," said Patrice Evans, one of this year's competitors and the mother of Teen Advisory Board member Malik Evans. "It's a lot of fun. I'm not a dancer, but I'm going to be a dancer."
