Cleanup at 64 Ishman Ballard Road should begin in the next few days, following a unanimous vote of the Coweta County Board of Commissioners.
The commissioners voted Tuesday night to award a bid for cleanup and demolition of the property. The low bidder was Horton's Inc., and the bid amount was $11,400.
That amount includes removal of tires on the property but does not include the "tipping fees" for the debris, which will be deposited at the county's landfill. Coweta County will be waiving the tipping fees, said Assistant County Administrator Kelly Mickle.
However, the amount of the waived fees will be tracked by the county "in order to include those as part of the lien against the property," Mickle said.
Under the terms of the bid, work is to begin within five days of the bid award and be completed in five days, weather permitting.
The work by Horton's will complete the cleanup of the site, located near the intersection of Ishman Ballard Road and the Hwy. 34 Bypass. The county has already removed asbestos from the site.
The site consists of four old houses that have become dilapidated and overgrown. The area has become a popular dump site over the years, and county officials haven't been able to get the property owners -- the heirs of the late owner -- to clean up the property.
Commissioner Al Smith got serious about cleaning up the site last summer.
"If you would go out and look at the location, you would agree with me that it is a disgrace to have this in Coweta County," Smith said in August.
"I appreciate everybody's work on this," said Commissioner Tim Lassetter before the vote Tuesday. "It's one of those situations that has taken longer than any of us wish it would have. I'm glad to see" the site will finally be cleaned up.

I agree with everyone who suggested that county prisoners and community service workers should be used to clean this mess (and other messes around the county for that matter). But my question to all of you is, have you emailed your county commissioners and asked them this question? They can not answer the question if they are not asked directly. I emailed them and am awaiting a response.

The owners could have secured their property but were too irresponsible to do even that. They should be 100% liable and any one caught dumping would be an added plus.

They're very busy cutting limbs on Gordon Rd. Why you ask? Because council members live out that way. Goes the same with paving. Drive on Gordon Rd, then drive on Ishman Ballard. Same results. Council members get tooken care of first, you know that!!

lots of good questions and comments here .i wish some of our elected officials would answer these.also theres a lot of property in coweta the tax havent been paidin 5 years & why?why cant comunity service and prisioners clean it up, makes sense to me.

Sounds like the property owners are the victims of people who are too lazy or cheap to bother with paying for trash service or the landfill.

Instead of paying to get it cleaned up why not use all these community service people or prisoners and then still get a lien for the labor hours. This way the county is making money.

I am happy to see this so many people have to see this. Also isn't this a county owned property since the taxes haven't been paid in more than 5 years? I am happy for my tax dollars to be working.

OH Yea!! Lowest bidder??!!! How about putting prisioners to work. This would be a good repayment project!! Whats wrong with these people????

This type dumping is a problem all over Georgia. The property owners should not be completely responsible. I few discreet trail cameras could identify the people dumping, and they could and should be responsible for the cleanup.

It's about time! What a disgusting eyesore this has been! I've even seen animals rummaging around the properties that look starved, probably abandoned. So glad these dumps will be gone soon. Maybe it will make the street more appealing to potential buyers as there have been a lot of homes for sale on the street.

Why not make a case against the owners and put them in jail that usually makes them come up with the money. Why should I has a tax payer have to spend my hard earn money on someone who wont clean their property up if it were me I would be in court. Lock them up!

Many thanks to the commissioners. I go by that property every day, and it is only getting worse. Now make sure that those who have so rudely been dumping on the property take their trash on down the road to the county dump. Thank you.

So many great comments on how to deal with this eyesore - since we have an abundance of inmates, why not put our 'Inmate Labor Force' to good use? This seems like a perfect assignment for all our inmates.
